Call to Action
Codify NJ Protection for Transgender and Reproductive Health Care
Please call your appropriate LD7 or LD8 NJ State legislators In Burlington County – Senator Troy Singleton (LD7) 856-234-2790 and Assemblywoman Andrea Katz (LD8) 609-850-2397.
Ask them to please "co-sponsor" Bill A4656, so that we can have NJ patients and providers protected in accessing and providing legally protected health care activities. A4656 establishes the right of NJ residents to legally protected health care services, which are restricted in other states. In addition, the bill provides protection for reproductive healthcare, including IVF.
In April 2023 Governor Murphy signed an executive order to protect gender affirming care, which is as necessary to transgender people as insulin is to diabetics, or hormones to postmenopausal women. This executive order can be erased with the swipe of a pen, depending upon who the next Governor is. S3491/A4656 will codify Governor Murphy’s executive order into law.
It is urgent that we do this now due to the draconian laws being passed by the Trump administration, as well as the fact we do not know who our next Governor will be. In addition to protecting necessary healthcare for transgender people, S3491/A4656 will protect their healthcare providers from prosecution for providing healthcare that is lawful in NJ.
LD7 includes: Mt Laurel, Moorestown, Cinnaminson, Delran, Palmyra, Riverton, Riverside, Delanco, Edgewater Park, Fieldsboro, Burlington, Beverly, Florence, Bordentown, and Willingboro
LD8 includes: Evesham, Lumberton, Medford, Medford Lakes, Pemberton, Hainesport, Mount Holly, the amptons (East, South, West), Bass River, Chesterfield, Mansfield Twp, New Hanover, Shamong, Springfield Twp, Tabernacle, Washington Twp, Woodland, Wrightstown, Egg Harbor City, Folsom, Hammonton, and Mullica.
Recent SJNOW Indivisible Accomplishments
Registering New Voters at Rowan College (RCBC) in Mt Laurel
We are pleased to report that the SJNOW Indivisible Campaign to Register New Young Voters at RCBC has been a huge success! This campaign was conceived, initiated, and led by Dave Lipshutz, and it occurred over several weeks in April. It included the tireless work of many SJNOW Indivisibles (over multiple 2 hour shifts). SJNOW Indivisibles greeted students as they were walking in and out of the Student Center and asked them in a nonpartisan fashion if they would like to register to vote.
The Results? We successfully registered (or provided materials for people to register later) a total of 106 New Young Voters at RCBC, which is really good for this type of low volume activity. Also, since most students we encountered were already registered, we were able to remind and encourage them to vote in the 2025 NJ June Primary and the November General Election. Finally, based on this success, Eileen Hill has contacted and will be working with many other NJ Indivisible groups to register new voters at Colleges and Universities in the fall, just in time for the crucial NJ Governor's election! So we have already become a Force Multiplier for Registering Students in all of NJ. If GOP Operatives can register Voters at NJ Gun Shows, we can do this at colleges and high schools!
Encouraging Rep Conaway and Sen Kim to Hold Town Halls in the 3 NJ Congressional GOP Districts
We are also pleased to report that several SJNOW Indivisibles attended in April Rep Conaway's Town Hall in Freehold Boro and Sen Kim's Town Hall in Cherry Hill. Based on these Indivisibles speaking up at these Town Halls, support from others at these Town Halls, and multiple previous Calls to Action (including from many SJNOW Indivisibles) to offices of these 2 individuals, both Conaway and Kim agreed in public to hold Town Halls in one or more of these GOP Districts. The main topic of these future Town Halls will be opposition to massive cuts in Medicaid and SNAP to fund huge tax cuts for the Wealthy and Corporations. We know that Rep Conaway is planning to hold a Town Hall, possibly in Brick, in Rep Chris Smith's NJ-4 District. Of course, we will need monitor things and continue to encourage (via future Calls to Action) both Rep Conaway and Sen Kim to keep their promises and to publicize well these events.
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Before I get anymore concerned emails, I know Bernie Sanders is going to be at the May 1st, 4pm Philadelphia Rally. We don't want people to have to choose between that and our meeting at the Marlton Middle School at 7 PM. We are working on it and I will keep you posted. We will know shortly.
Eileen
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Here’s the sign up link for the May 1 Rally in Philadelphia that is earlier than the 4pm one.

NEWS
More Polls Show a Fall in Donald Trump’s Approval Rating
In regard to the latest polls coming out, the Economist/YouGov poll found Trump’s approval rating down to 41% and also found that he is underwater on every issue. The recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found Trump’s backing is down to just 42%, while just 37% support his handling of the economy. As he approaches the 100 day mark, The New York Times and the Washington Post averred the since modern polling began, no president has ever fared worse at this point in his term. A lack of public support may affect Trump’s influence in international affairs and also may affect his backing in congress.
News on the Secretary of Defense Peter Hegseth
Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth threatened to subject two high officials in his department to polygraph tests, reportedly shouting accusations at Admiral Christopher Grady, the recent Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hegseth is said to have threatened to hook Admiral Grady up to a lie detector, due to suspicions regarding a possible leak of information that Elon Musk was scheduled for a classified briefing about China. (Wall Street Journal April 24, 2425). Hegseth had recently fired three of the staff that he himself brought into the administration. A fourth employee resigned after describing his job under Hegseth as his “Month from Hell”, (See Politico today). The NY Times called Hegseth's leadership “a run of chaos that is unmatched in the recent history of the Defense Department.”
Trump’s D.O.J. Bows to the Courts and Changes its Position on Student Visas
The Trump administration has restored the student visa registrations of thousands of foreign students studying in the United States who had minor — and often dismissed — legal infractions.
The Justice Department announced the wholesale reversal in federal court Friday after weeks of intense scrutiny by courts and dozens of restraining orders issued by judges who deemed the mass termination of students from a federal database — used by universities and the federal government to track foreign students in the U.S. — as flagrantly illegal.

DAILY INDIVISIBLE EMAIL FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2025
NEWS
Approval Rating of Donald Trump
According to a Pew Research Center survey released yesterday, 59% of Americans disapprove of how Donald Trump is handling his job while 40% approve. The most recent Fox News survey shows that President Trump’s approval rating is 11 points underwater, the latest sign of his support starting to drop ahead of his second term, hitting the 100-day mark next week. Fox noted the latest number is lower than where all of his most recent predecessors were at this point in their presidencies.
Progress of the Resistance Movement
State Action
Twelve states have sued the Trump administration to stop the tariffs, saying they are illegal because the U.S. Constitution states that only Congress may levy taxes, duties, imposts and excises taxes. The lawsuit also states that there is no emergency justifying the passage of these tariffs, as required by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which the Trump administration relied on for its authority to enact them. The states bringing the lawsuit include purple states like Arizona and Colorado as well as Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon and Vermont.
Town Halls Throughout the U.S.
According to Newsweek, on Tuesday, the Republican candidate for Florida Governor, Byron Donalds, was loudly booed and repeatedly interrupted at a town hall event in Estero, Florida. While answering a question about Elon Musk and DOGE’s cuts to the Social Security Administration, Donalds told the crowd, “Don’t boo,” but the crowd continued to jeer. Newsweek also reported that DOGE has been a hot button for overs in red and blue districts, where citizens are frustrated by the slashing of federal jobs and the proposed closure of Social Security Offices.
Judicial Action
A federal judge on Monday blocked billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing people’s private data at three federal departments, including the Treasury Department, (which includes the IRS), as well as the Education Department, and the Office of Personnel Management.
The case was filed last month by a coalition of labor unions and led by the American Federation of Teachers, alleging that the Trump administration violated federal privacy laws when it gave DOGE access to systems with personal information on tens of millions of Americans without their consent.
DAILY INDIVISIBLE EMAIL FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2025
Dear Indivisible Friends,
NEWS: Elon Musk has stated he will step back from the U.S. DOGE Service next month because Tesla has had a stunning 71% plunge in profits since last year at this time, due to backlash over his DOGE work. Major news outlets have stated that the plunge in value of Tesla was due to the bad name brand Tesla has developed as a result. (The rallies against Tesla appear to have been working!). Interestingly, Tesla has blamed Trump for the losses, based upon his administration’s devastating policy of placing tariffs on most of America’s trading partners.
Growing Resistance in Congress
On Monday, Senator Peter Welch of Vermont visited a Columbia University student, in an ICE detention Center, who was detained after he had reported to ICE to meet with the requirements of his immigration status. (He was arrested even though he had a green card.) Yesterday, several Democratic Congressmen, including Rep. Bennie Thomson, Rep. Jim McGovern, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Troy Carter and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts came to visit constituents imprisoned in two ICE facilities in Louisiana. One of the constituents they visited, Wendy Brito, was a New Orleans-area mother who had resided in the U.S. for fifteen years. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained her at a routine check-in with the agency. Ms. Brito’s husband is an American citizen and she has three children, all of whom are American citizens.
Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
Shares More Detailed information about Plans to Attack Yemen
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed information a second time about forthcoming strikes in Yemen on March 15th in another Signal group chat that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer, as revealed yesterday in reports by The New York Times and other major media news outlets.
The information Mr. Hegseth shared included the flight schedules for the F/A-18 Hornets targeting the Houthis in Yemen — essentially the same attack plans that he shared on a separate Signal chat the same day that mistakenly included the editor of The Atlantic.
It also appears that Mr. Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer, has traveled with him overseas and drawn criticism for accompanying her husband to sensitive meetings with foreign leaders.
CALL TO ACTION:
HOLD PETE HEGSETH and CABINET OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE FOR MISHANDLING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION!!!!!
Hegseth has yet again shared sensitive military attack plans in a Signal chat with a dozen people in his personal circle, including his wife and lawyer.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
Call your representatives and demand they call for the immediate resignation for both Defense Secretary Hegseth and National Security advisor, Michael Waltz!!!!

Dear Fellow Indivisibles,
Before getting to the news for today, we want to let you know that because of the number of choices for attending rallies on May 1, 2025 in New Jersey and Philadelphia, we will be able to keep our monthly meeting on May 1st NOW MAY 7 at the regular time, which is 7 P.M.! The meeting will once more be held at the Marlton Middle School, 150 Tomlinson Mill Road in Marlton in the all-purpose room. The doors of the building will open at 6:30 P.M. Look forward to seeing you there!
NOTE: WE ARE ALSO REQUESTING THAT SOMEONE VOLUNTEER TO RECORD OUR NEXT MONTHLY MEETING. THIS CAN BE DONE BY PHONE, IPAD OR LAPTOP OR OTHER DEVICE. YOUR ASSISTANCE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
May 1st—MAY DAY
There are several choices for rallies to attend the National Day of Action on May Day. Since May 1 is also Law Day, which symbolizes the Rule of Law in a free society, there is a rally to support civil rights and liberties, justice and equality at noon at the North Portico of City Hall, Philadelphia. Our members may be able to attend both that rally as well as our monthly meeting at 7 P.M. in the evening if they wish.
There is also a rally in Point Pleasant in Ocean County NJ that goes from 2-4 P.M. This rally is in N.J. Congressional District 4, which is Cong. Chris Smith’s district. Since Chris Smith refuses to hold town halls to meet with his constituents, this is an appropriate place to hold a protest!
Events for these protests are aimed to take place over several days and times, to fit the schedules of working people. Part of the themes also include the struggle of the working class for equality with the one percent.
NEWS: A major milestone has been reached as the mainstream media is finally beginning to report on our rallies and protests across the country, as organized by Indivisible and others! This includes the major TV networks and newspapers including the NY Times, the Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. This is a big step forward in our movement! The NY Times headline for the April 19th rally was “Shame! Protestors Nationwide Rally Again to Condemn Trump”. The Associated Press showed a photo of a sign outside the White House: “Trump Must Go Now!” The L.A. Times showed a gigantic sign carved into the beach, “Impeach & Remove!”
Notably, there were rallies last weekend in the reddest of states, including Idaho, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, Florida, Utah, Montana, West Virginia, North Dakota, South Carolina, Alabama, and Alaska!
Colleges and Universities Unite Against the Trump Administration
After the April 5th nationwide demonstrations, (which a number of our members attended), Harvard stated that because of those demonstrations, they decided to oppose the Trump administration’s demands to change their curricula and are now suing his administration!
In addition, over 200 colleges and universities have now signed a pledge to resist Trump’s attacks. These institutions include Harvard, UPenn, MIT and Yale. After initially capitulating, Columbia has also now signed the pledge.
Growing Resistance in Congress
More Democratic members of Congress are now supporting Senator Chris van Hollen’s courageous act in going to El Salvador to seek the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal resident of the United States whom the Trump administration mistakenly sent to a notorious torture prison and now refuses to release. Reps. Robert Garcia of California, Maxwell Frost of Florida, Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, and Maxine Dexter of Oregon said in a joint press statement that they had done so to bring attention to “President Trump’s illegal defiance of the binding and unanimous Supreme Court decision” that ordered Abrego Garcia be returned to the U.S..
The release of Abrego-Garcia is extremely important, as Trump has implied that he may consider sending American citizens to similar prisons without a hearing or due process, as Mr. Garcia was.
Fight the Trump Administration's Defiance of the Constitution and Courts
On April 14th, the Trump administration openly defied a unanimous order from the Supreme Court by refusing to bring back a Venezuelan migrant they knowingly sent to a torture prison in El Salvador by mistake. During a court hearing for Rumeysa Ozturk, a student detained by ICE for writing an op-ed, a federal court judge raised similar concerns about the administration refusing to adhere to his orders and instigating a “constitutional crisis.”
Since Day 1, the Trump administration has been consistently eroding the constitutional separation of powers and system of checks and balances. They have…
Repeatedly stonewalled federal district judges in court proceedings, defied orders, and threatened to impeach them
Attempted to revoke birthright citizenship
Usurped Congress’s constitutional “power of the purse” to block mandated federal funding to essential programs
Violated the First Amendment and due process rights of students and activists
Allowed an unelected billionaire and a team of hackers unregulated access to secure government data, including sensitive information about US citizens and businesses, to be used for unknown purposes
Expressed interest in sending US citizens to a gulag in El Salvador
Invoked the Alien Enemies Act, outside of a legally required Declaration of War, to disappear migrants without due process
Invoked emergency powers to bypass Congress’s constitutional authority over tariffs and trade policy
Regularly used an unapproved commercial chat app to discuss military operations and other classified information
Refused to enforce federal regulations and bypassed the required “notice and comment” period to unlawfully repeal others
With the Trump administration’s repeated defiance of laws and judicial rulings, it is clear that we are firmly in a constitutional crisis. Trump and his team of government cronies believe they are above the law and will continue to harm Americans and dismantle our democracy as long as they are in power. Congress must forcefully act now to reclaim their co-equal role in our government, protect the rule of law, and stop the Trump administration’s complete decimation of our government.

I’m calling to demand that ________________(senator and representative) take tangible action to stop the Trump administration from defying federal court orders, including Supreme Court orders, and hold the administration accountable for their blatant disregard for the rule of law. I ask that ________________(senator and representative). . .
[Pick 1-3 actions:]

Dear SJNOWIndivisible
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionists.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
— Martin Niemoller
On April 14th during a meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, both Bukele and Trump made it clear that they will not make any attempt to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the innocent Maryland father Trump's regime mistakenly sent to a Salvadoran prison.
This is despite the Supreme Court's unanimous order for the Trump administration to make a good faith effort to do so.
If they succeed in defying the courts and permanently imprisoning an innocent man like Garcia without any due process or opportunity for recourse they will continue to do so with others.
Congress must fight against this dangerous escalation of Trump's authoritarianism. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced his plans to travel to El Salvador to bring Abrego Garcia home. More legislators must join him in ensuring these violations of due process and other rights do not go unchallenged.
Call your congressmen to bring Abrego Garcia home.

Call your senators and urge them to vote against H.R 22—the MAGA bill that would disfranchise tens of millions of voters.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Beginning tomorrow, the five leaders will rotate writing this daily email, each one doing a week at a time. Tomorrow, it’s Ralph Hendrickson’s turn. Though the style of writing may be different, you will still be getting the latest news you need to know, Calls to Action, actions you can take, new projects and reasons for hope.
1.The following is a VERY IMPORTANT Call to Action
This bill requires 60 votes in the Senate. Republicans have 53 senators but I hope several of them vote against it. I certainly hope no Democratic Senator supports it as it is blatant, massive voter suppression. It's important to let Senators Kim and Booker know that we know what's going on, and we have their back. They have both been stars and as I've said before, positive reinforcement really works and it's fun! It will also help your own mindset.
Dear SJNOWIndivisible, Call your senators to tell them to oppose H.R.22, the SAVE ACT - a voter suppression bill that passed the House. This bill will create unnecessary barriers to voter registration and disenfranchise countless voters, especially women, seniors, and low-income citizens as it requires citizens to present a birth certificate (that matches their present name) or passport in person to register. This bill is designed to block voters despite no real evidence of widespread fraud.

2. If anyone is going to Congressman Herb Conaway's Town Hall in Freehold, please email Ralph Hendrickson. John Stevens is looking for people to go with.
1. Call to Action
Trump has issued an executive order that directs the fast-tracking of timber production on 113 million acres of national forest - roughly half of national forest land belonging to the American people. In order to do so, Trump has ordered agencies to bypass environmental laws and regulations. This unregulated expansion of logging risks the long-term viability of our public lands and does so without assessing the impact on air quality, water quality, wildfire risks and public safety.
Call your Representative and Senators and ask them to hold the Trump Administration accountable to current environmental law. Ask them to protect and preserve the public lands that belong to every American.

Friends,
My heart leapt last Saturday when I saw how many people turned out for the Hands Off protests: More than 1,200 rallies were held across all 50 states — drawing an estimated 3 million participants. Even red states like Alaska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Kentucky had well-attended protests.
Across the land, demonstrators were peaceful, civil, and respectful; the atmosphere was buoyant and joyful — yet determined.
There were other reasons for modest hope this week. Herewith:
1. Trump’s wild retreat on tariffs.
Trump has called tariffs the key to American prosperity and said trade wars are easy to win. But investors think otherwise, and on Wednesday Trump decided maybe investors are right. It was a large and embarrassing retreat.
After a flight from U.S. assets and a rout in the bond market, Trump announced a pause for 90 days on the worst of his “liberation” tariffs on most countries, China excepted.
Even after Trump’s retreat, the stock market continued to tumble yesterday, signaling renewed investor concern about the worsening trade war with China and the destabilizing effects of Trump’s tariffs. In the government bond market, U.S. Treasuries started to sell off again, with the yield on 10-year Treasuries climbing to around 4.4 percent, the highest since February.
Trump’s on-again-off-again tariff madness is further undermining public confidence in his regime (see #7, below).
2. Trump can’t win a trade war with China because he’s cut off other suppliers. Duh.
After China retaliated against last week’s tariffs, imposing an 84 percent duty on all U.S. goods, Trump raised his duties on Chinese imports to a total of 145 percent.
But facing off against the world’s second-largest economy in a trade war requires alternative and reliable suppliers, which Trump has foolishly cut off.
He seemed to believe he could make deals with traditional partners such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan to team up against China. But Trump’s unexpectedly aggressive levies against these nations, including his bonkers 46 percent tariff on Vietnam, spooked them — so they’re not available as alternative suppliers.
China has been looking to take advantage of any rifts, dispatching its foreign minister to meet with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts.
It’s just more clumsy, incompetent Trump economic policy that’s undermining public confidence.
3. Democrats see a surge of interest in running for office.
Partly as a result of this and other horrors (such as last week’s Signalgate and Elon Musk’s ongoing mayhem), Democrats are gearing up to push deeper into red territory on the campaign trail next year.
Three Senate candidates rolled out their bids this week and party recruiters are reporting an uptick in interest from candidates in tough-to-win territory.
Among the areas of interest: an Iowa district now held by GOP Rep. Zach Nunn (which is certain to feel the effects of Trump’s tariffs); two prospective bids in Pennsylvania and Michigan by candidates who lost or left jobs thanks to the Trump administration, giving them a powerful story on the campaign trail; a pair of former representatives considering comeback bids for battleground districts in the Rust Belt; and at least two districts in Virginia, held by GOP Reps. Rob Wittman and Jen Kiggans, that Dems believe are increasingly in play thanks to backlash against Elon Musk’s government cost-cutting frenzy.
Meanwhile, former Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.) announced he’ll run for Senate with plans to hammer Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) for not standing up to Trump. Notably, Nickel’s launch video leads with an attack on Tillis for not voting against tariffs.
Mike Sacks became the fourth Democrat to jump into the race against Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.). The lawyer and former TV reporter’s campaign pledge? To “unfuck the country.”
The renewed excitement from Democrats also comes as Barack Obama delivered a scathing speech hitting back against Trump this week at Hamilton College, which the former president intended as an approach for Democrats to follow.
Obama said he doesn’t believe Democrats need to choose between criticizing Trump on practical kitchen-table issues (like the prices of groceries) or criticizing him on his rejection of democracy and the rule of law, because Trump could not have threatened the kitchen-table well-being of most Americans if he hadn’t also ran roughshod over our democracy.
4. Democrats are plotting a fresh round of town halls in GOP-held districts, to hammer Republicans
As another recess period begins, Democrats see another opportunity to strike against embattled Republicans for scaling back town halls and other open forums. On top of their town-hall target list over the upcoming recess is North Carolina’s National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson, who told GOP representatives last month to stop holding in-person town halls.
5. Trump’s firing of Timothy Haugh at Laura Loomer’s urging causes widespread bipartisan concern.
Conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer — yes, the person who thinks 9/11 was an inside job, who has openly advocated at a white nationalist conference that she is a white advocate, who said during the campaign that if [the presidential race was won by] Kamala Harris, who is half Indian, “the White House would smell like curry, and White House speeches will be facilitated by a call center” — is influencing Trump’s critical decisions over staffing his foreign policy team.
At Loomer’s urging, Trump this week fired Gen. Timothy Haugh, a four-star general who served as head of both the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command.
Haugh’s termination shocked lawmakers and national security veterans, who described the unexpected action as a “chilling” one that would damage America’s cyber defenses and “roll out the red carpet” for attacks on critical networks by foreign adversaries. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are furious at the firing, which they say severely undermine the nation’s national security efforts.
6. The Republican Party is splitting over tariffs
Seven Republican senators who think Trump’s tariffs are bad policy have signed on as co-sponsors of the Trade Review Act, which would reassert Congress’ trade authority and let it weigh in on new tariffs. Those seven: Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Todd Young (R-Indiana), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine).
7. Trump’s poll numbers continue to drop.
An Economist-YouGov poll (done between April 5 and April 8) shows Trump’s approval rating falling to 43 percent from 48 percent two weeks ago, with a stunning 80 percent of Americans expecting the tariffs to raise prices for things they buy.
Since inauguration day, Trump has lost 29 points among voters aged 18-29, 14 points among 30-44, and 8 points among 65+.
A Navigator poll (done between April 3 and April 7) shows Trump’s economic approval at its worst ever, with 58 percent of Americans holding an unfavorable view of tariffs, compared to only 30 percent favorable. Overall, Trump has a 44 percent approval versus 53 percent disapproval.
Quinnipiac’s latest poll (done April 3 to April 7), shows that 72 percent voters think Trump’s tariffs will hurt the economy in the short-term, including 77 percent of independents and 44 percent of Republicans Overall, Trump has a 41 percent approval and 53 percent disapproval.
8. The courts continue to hit back at Trump
On Thursday, the Supreme Court endorsed a trial judge’s order that requires the government to “facilitate and effectuate the return” of a Salvadoran migrant it had wrongly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador.
Federal judges in both New York and Texas have blocked the deportations of Venezuelan men likely to be deported under the Trump administration's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act.
Meanwhile, a federal judge has ordered Trump to reinstate Associated Press access to White House events, after Trump banned the news service for continuing to call the sea between the southern states and Mexico the “Gulf of Mexico.”
9. The Solicitor General’s Office loses much of its talent.
The Solicitor General’s office is expected to lose at least half of its 16 assistant lawyers because of their concerns about Trump’s Justice Department. It’s an unusual exodus that raises questions about the Trump regime’s ability to win arguments at the Supreme Court (full disclosure: I used to work in the Solicitor General’s office).
10. The Republican’s budget will cause mayhem.
House Republicans have approved a budget blueprint that requires them to find $1.5 trillion of spending cuts.
Trump’s and the Republican’s goal is to pass another huge tax cut that, like the last one, will mostly benefit big corporations and the wealthy. But the only way they can get close to $1.5 trillion in cuts would be to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
I include this as a small reason for modest hope because cutting these popular programs in order to give a giant tax cut to big corporations and the wealthy would be political suicide.
11. Musk is disappearing.
Finally, did you notice that you heard almost nothing about Elon Musk this week? That could be because his influence in the White House is quickly disappearing.
Part of the reason is Elon apparently doesn’t like tariffs (he lost an estimated $31 billion since April 2, when Trump announced them, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.)
On Monday, Peter Navarro, Trump’s trade advisor, said on CNBC that Musk was not a “car manufacturer” but a “car assembler” because Tesla, Mr. Musk’s electric vehicle company, relied on parts from around the world.
Musk fired back on Tuesday, calling Navarro a “moron” and “dumber than a sack of bricks” in a post on X. Later in the day, Musk posted “That was so unfair to bricks,” and referred to Navarro as “Peter Retarrdo.”
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, tried to downplay the tiff by saying “Boys will be boys.” Yes, and adolescents will be adolescents.
12. DOGE is sinking.
The wildly unpopular DOGE seems to be sinking. The Social Security Administration is walking back its DOGE-led, widely-unpopular phone service cuts. DOGE itself is now being audited by the Government Accountability Office over its access to and use of sensitive government data. And Trump’s own pollster, Tony Fabrizio, found that a majority of Trump voters oppose efforts to cut Medicaid.
***
The Trump horror show continues. I bring you these small reasons for modest hope to remind you that there are still some cause for optimism. The struggle will be long and difficult, but the forces of decency are like the green shoots of spring — small and fragile now yet eventually powerful enough to overcome the harshness and cruelty of this regime.
1. Our first college registration event was a big success. Dave Lipshutz took his first team to Rowan College – Burlington County and in four hours, 7 people filled out paper applications, three more registered online with our help, and 13 more took either paper applications, or took the application via the QR code. This is low, hanging fruit people and I really think we need to focus on it. We will be planning this all summer. College kids usually leave campus the first week in May as you know. Get psyched, we're going to be doing a lot more of this.
2. Congressman Herb Conaway- Town Hall Wednesday April 16 from 7-8:30pm at Park Ave Elementary School, 280 Park Ave, Freehol 07728 To RSVP, click this link fill out this form
3. Attendance at April 5 Rallies We rock! People thought I underestimated the group's participation. I thought there about 30. The real number is 60 and that's only the people who emailed me. The energy of this group is fantastic!
4. Social Security Day Of Action - Trump, Musk, and Republicans have launched a full assault on Social Security, firing staff, closing field offices, and making it harder for Americans to access their hard-earned benefits. So we’re joining Social Security Works to mobilize on April 15, the Social Security Day of Action, to (once again) say: Hands Off!
What if there’s no rally near you? Grab a few friends or other activists, find your local Social Security field office, and head over with signs to thank the workers that are still there, helping our seniors and neighbors with disabilities. Take photos and post them on social media -- and don’t forget to tag us!

Eileen--
It is so important to register new Democratic voters. Where can you find them? On college campuses! Dave Lipshutz needs helps registering Rowan students. Please read his email below and respond to him ASAP!
I am glad to report that SJ NOW Indivisible has now obtained permission from Rowan College Burlington County, Mount Laurel campus, on Route 38, to pursue voter registration on campus through April (finals begin first week of May).
NJ's primary election for Governor and Assembly is June 10. The voter registration deadline is May 20.
Data has shown that people who vote in a primary election are more likely to also vote in the general election.
We HAVE to get more young people to vote.
Voter registration events are required to be non-partisan, we can't wear or say anything promoting one party, and we have to file all registrations- but we can choose venues that skew more Democratic (just as the Republicans are doing at gun shows).
We have obtained up to three tables, each with two chairs, inside the Student Success Center, where students hang out.
We have been given the following days: 4/10, 4/14, 4/15,4/21, 4/22, 4/23, and 4/24.
I suggest two hour shifts, 10-12,12-2, 2-4.
Please let me know who is interested, and for which shift. I will try to give as many people as possible a chance to participate and will try to accommodate your shift time requests.
We will have paper registration forms available, one for Burlington County, one for the rest of the State which goes to Trenton (it's a commuter school). If students prefer to register online, that's their choice. I prefer doing it with them so I know it's done, and done correctly.
If you are interested, please email to Eileen and me your name, phone number, and requested shifts. Once I see who's interested, I'll figure out shifts and email those, along with general instructions on how to do this.
However, you should familiarize yourself beforehand with the NJ voter registration form and voter registration requirements by Googling NJ.gov- voter registration.
We could use a few "REGISTER TO VOTE HERE!' signs, if anyone can do those.
We do NOT want some Republican Trump-lover as Governor here!
Let's rock this!
Thanks. Dave Lipshutz (Dave's email is delipshutz at comcast dot net )
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
1. Call to Action!!
Trump has issued a new executive order that would require voters to prove their US citizenship to vote. Trump’s EO would require US citizens to produce documentation of citizenship, like a passport, to register to vote; an estimated 9% of US citizens of voting age lack this documentation. The order also threatens to withhold federal funding from any states who count mail-in ballots received after Election Day and grants federal agencies, including DOGE, access to state voter rolls to check them for “consistency with Federal requirements.”
Call Governor Phil Murphy and tell him to defend our state’s current election laws against Trump's unlawful Executive Order that aims to disenfranchise millions of Americans. States have constitutional authority over administering elections, not the federal government.
Gov Murphy 609-292-6000
2. Join the 50501 Movement - Next 50 State Nationwide Protest - April 19
250th anniversary of revolutionary war

3. Senator Brian Schatz put a hold on 300 Trump nominees in protest of Trump‘s flagrant lawlessness. Additionally, he’s blocking a slate of foreign affairs bills. The holds span more than a dozen agencies and departments, including the State Department.
The Senator told Axios, “Their lawlessness is escalating, and they are intentionally destroying the economy, and so I don’t think we should make anything easy going forward.”
4. Referring To Senator Booker's speech:
During his remarks, over 1,000 Indivisibles called the senator’s office to thank him for grabbing the spotlight and setting an example of how Democrats can fight back while in the minority. They urged him and his colleagues to continue stepping up their defiance against Trump’s authoritarian agenda.
5. When we win, people will talk about Hands Off! as the turning point in the fight against the American fascist movement. Courage is contagious, y’all. And we are going to win.
-- Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director, Indivisible
The postcards are in for the project involving the 16,000 Burlington County registered Democrats who did not vote in the 2024 election. These postcards are different from the ones we normally use. Postcarding is now being taken over by Sue A. as of today. Please address all postcard related questions to Sue. She also lives in Mount Laurel so it won't be a problem for pick up.
[ Please see the group email for her address and email information.]
She will contact you when your bags are ready for pick up. We are continuing the project to register new Democratic voters through Field Team 6. You can request those postcards from Sue as well.
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
The rally is tomorrow and we have lots of people going!! It looks like light rain is possible ,so prepare accordingly.
Parking: All of the gates are down. Do not let this deter you. When you pull up, the gate goes up. We are meeting at 10:40 AM to catch the 10:53 train. Everyone who requested tickets has them or knows I am bringing them with me.
We are all pumped and ready to go. Let's have a great time tomorrow rallying to save Democracy.
“The power of the people is greater than the people in power.” Not my quote but a great one.
Eileen
=====================================================================
Bring water & snacks
Rather than a purse, consider a light backpack to carry your few possessions which will not restrict your movement or ability to hold your sign.
Best not to bring valuables with you as there will be a lot of people there and if you're worried about losing anything, copy your ID and carry that with you.
Plastic gloves are recommended if you will be picking up anything on the street. We're supposed to leave the area clean.
Weather Update: be prepared...
From email thread: Our Democracy has never been more vulnerable. Congress which is controlled by the Republicans has laid down and played dead. They confirmed clearly unqualified people for Cabinet positions and have rubber stamped every outrageous thing Trump has done. Congress is not going to save us. The Judiciary has been fighting back. The concern here is that Trump has already refused to follow a Judge's order. This has to do with the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants. The Judge has ordered two flights that were in the air to turn around. That didn't happen, they went to a maximum security prison in El Salvador. The same Judge has ruled that no more flights can take place but apparently that is also happening. I am very very concerned about this. It is the tip of the iceberg.
A Judge is capable of holding the Trump administration in contempt. However, US Marshals are under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department. The Justice Department is led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has made it clear that the rule of law will not stop her from satisfying Trump's agenda. It's very hard for me to believe this woman was the Attorney General of Florida for 12 years.
All of this is to say, the only thing that can save us, is we the people.
We have been spoiled in America. There has never been a time when the President has actively worked to destroy the Federal Government. We have never had a narcissistic criminal sociopath who is bound and determined to destroy our economy, the rule of law, all of our hallowed institutions that make us great. and our place in the world. Never has a president cozied up to dictators and antagonized our Allies.
There has never been a time when Americans needed to take to the streets to literally save our Democracy. The signs of Autocracy are all there. He cozies up to dictators, he muses about a third term, he wants to pass election law that will make it very difficult for people to vote, he puts pressure on major law firms to not represent people who are against him, and he has been shutting down media that is not friendly to him. This is a five alarm fire!!
Protesting on the streets is definitely not something I'm comfortable with. It's not easy or convenient. However, if we don't get over our discomfort and take to the streets, we truly will lose our country. Right now we can still protest in relative safety. I cannot assure you that that will always be true.
I hope those of you who know me and know that I am usually the eternal optimist, will be really unnerved by what I am saying.
We need to show up in huge numbers on Saturday, April 5 to save our country. This is not hyperbole.
If you've decided that you are sufficiently worried and want to join us, we are meeting at the Woodcrest Patco station at 10:40 AM on Saturday, April 5 to take the 10:53am train to Philly. If you are late, we will not wait for you. The rally starts at City Hall at 12 noon. We will continue down to Independence Mall and that's where the rally will end. Total time listed is 12 noon to 3 PM. Buy your Hi Speed line tickets in advance, I think there's going to be a lot of people there.
Right now it is supposed to rain on Saturday. Check the weather reports. Wear a raincoat, bring an umbrella if you want and cover your poster with saran wrap, or some kind of plastic. You cannot be deterred by minor inconveniences. We will never save our Democracy that way.
Congressman Herb Conway is having a Town Hall: Wednesday, April 16, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Park Avenue Elementary School (280 Park Ave, Freehold, NJ 07728). To RSVP, please fill out this form or scan the QR Code below. Thank you!
Event Details:
Date: Wednesday, April 16th
Time: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Location: Park Avenue Elementary School (280 Park Ave, Freehold, NJ 07728)
1. Thank Senator Cory Booker for speaking out against Trump and Musk on the floor of the Senate all night long. I was waiting for him to show up and speak out as Andy Kim has.
Call him and thank him so he continues to do it!
Senator Corey Booker

2. Apparently the 11:15am meet up time for April 5 is much too late. I have changed the meet up time to 10:40am for the 10:53 train. If you miss it, the next train is at 11:13am. It takes 20 minutes to get there and then it’s a 15 minute walk to City Hall. It starts at noon. After speeches, we walk down to Independence Mall for more speeches and rallying.
Call Your representative: Help block Republicans from disenfranchising millions of voters with their “Silencing Americans Act." This week, we expect the House to vote on H.R. 22 -- one of the biggest threats to voting rights we’ve seen in a generation. You may know this bill as the “SAVE Act” but we are calling it by a more accurate title -- the “Silencing Americans Act.” The bill requires voters to show proof of citizenship documents that match their current legal name -- something tens of millions of Americans simply don’t have. It’d cause massive challenges for married women and trans and nonbinary people who’ve changed their names, and disproportionately impact people of color. Visit our website for more information on this bill and Trump’s related Executive Order.
POSTED 1-Apr-2025
Governor Murphy must veto S3507/A4652 to protect the basic pillars of democracy--the right to free speech and freedom of assembly. We are living in a moment in which freedom of speech is under attack. We need to safeguard that right here in New Jersey.
This bill began as an attempt to deal with unruly teens at town events and has ballooned into legislation that could embolden authoritarianism. This piece of legislation would criminalize organizing groups of four or more who protest and speak out in a way that would "offend the sensibilities of a hearer." The language within this bill offers legal pathways to criminalize protests. This legislation would revoke citizens' right to cause public inconvenience or annoyance as is sometimes necessary to force power holders to listen. Under this bill, a person who tries to organize a group to speak out in public could be charged with a disorderly persons offense.
Governor Murphy needs to take a stand against this poorly crafted bill. Take a minute to send your message to Governor Murphy and tell him to veto this bill!
You can text Governor Murphy at (732)605-5455: Tell him to veto S3507/A4652. Protect free speech and right to assemble!

2025-Apr-01: Peoples Town Halls
The national Democratic Party's Treasurer, Virginia McGregor, sends out periodic newsletters and her latest one this a.m. lists "actions" that activists can take. One is to participate in one of the "People's Town Halls" that the Democrats are organizing around the country. It turns out that there is one--a virtual one--taking place in NJ on April 2nd, 7-8:30PM: https://democrats.org/peoples-town-halls/
It features Gov. Murphy, Reps. Conaway, McIver, Menendez, Norcross, Pallone, Pou, & Watson Coleman along with NJ state Chair Leroy Jones. It conflicts, obviously, with one of our IONJ candidate forums, but some people may want to attend the webinar and report back.
Real change starts with real conversations. People’s Town Halls are your chance to connect with neighbors, community leaders, and organizers.
