Dear Indivisibles:
LATEST NEWS OF THE RESISTANCE:
The columnist for the editorial page of The Washington Post, Dana Milbank, wrote today that “More and more Americans are summoning the courage to fight back against President Donald Trump”. In his column entitled, “The Bully Gets Punched in the Nose”, he observed that Elon Musk himself criticized Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” because it would increase the federal deficit, which his DOGE group was trying to reduce. He also noted that federal judges have just struck down most of Trump’s tariffs.
The columnist also cited the fact that the term “TACO” for “Trump Always Chickens Out” regarding tariffs, was not only viral on Wall Street but online as well, as Trump has revoked his tariffs many times, backing down from his own extreme measures.
Milbank also observed that Trump only reacts to compliance by demanding more, but when other countries retaliated against his tariffs, he backed down repeatedly and lifted them.
Likewise, when Russia refused to consider Trump’s appeal for peace with Ukraine, Trump again backed down.
Trump even used more conciliatory language in regard to Harvard University after a court blocked his ban on international students, stating that “Harvard has to understand the last thing I want to do is hurt them.” So, when he loses in court or faces retaliation, Milbank noted, Trump behaves like a classic bully and retreats.
This week, NPR and other member stations sued the Trump administration for cutting off its funds by executive order. The plaintiffs were represented by a conservative legal luminary, one of three GOP Super lawyers who have stood up to Trump’s abuses. Milbank concluded, “It was another blow, squarely landed, on the bully’s nose.”

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
It's hard to imagine Senators Kim and Booker don't know about this but it is imperative that they do. If someone has heard or read that they definitely know about this, please email me. I would feel a lot better. I was published today in the Philadelphia Inquirer. It explains the issue I am talking about.
Philadelphia Inquirer May 30, 2025
Letter to the Editor
"Sound the Alarm"
"The responsibility of The Inquirer is to keep the public informed. The House of Representatives has passed the One Big Beautiful Bill. Hidden in the enormous legislation is something that will change this country from a democracy to an autocracy."
"Buried in Section 70302 is a clause that says no federal court may enforce a contempt citation. If the courts have no ability to enforce compliance with their rulings, then Donald Trump can break whatever laws he wants. The courts have already ruled against Trump 170 times. Trump has already defied a unanimous 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court decision to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home from a Salvadoran prison. The Inquirer needs to put this in huge, bold print on the front page every day until the Senate removes this provision. Everything else right now is less important."
Please call them and tell them you are horrified and alarmed by this and want them to fight like hell to get this provision taken out of the bill.
Senator Andy Kim 202-224-4744 856-757-5353
Senator Cory Booker 202-224-3224 856-338-8922
IF LEAVING VOICEMAIL: Please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied.
This issue is urgent.
Please spread the word to everyone you know. The Senate Parliamentarian will rule against the inclusion of this clause in the reconciliation bill as it is clearly not a budget issue. I do not trust Senator Thune to not find some way to work around this. He has already done this with another issue. I do not trust the Senate Republicans to care that this clause effectively changes our democracy into an autocracy. Hard to believe, but it's true.
We the people have to stop it!!

Call to Action
We must block the increase in funding for ICE that is proposed in the House budget reconciliation bill. This would enable ICE to continue its unlawfully detainment of immigrants without cause or due process. We can't allow them to keep violating people's constitutional rights. Call your senators to oppose the bill and this provision.

NEWS OF THE RESISTANCE:
The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration that have rattled the markets and raised concerns in businesses and households across the country, have been stopped by a federal court. The federal Court of International Trade struck down the majority of Trump’s tariffs, resulting in a rise in the stock market indexes yesterday. As described by Congressman Jamie Raskin in his online town hall yesterday, this makes approximately 171 restraining orders issued by courts against the Trump agenda. Congressman Raskin explained that when the public rises up and the courts act, Resistance movements have a very good chance of success.
Although the Court of Appeals has temporarily stayed the above-mentioned ruling, the future of the tariffs is questionable as the ruling rests on the fact that the Constitution explicitly gives Congress, not the President, the power to impose taxes, imposts or duties on goods. Notably, one of the three judges who unanimously issued the ruling was a Trump appointee.
On the public resistance front, yesterday in Nebraska, Congressman Mike Flood (R), was verbally attacked by his own constituents for voting for Trump’s bill which slashed Medicaid and cut taxes for the rich. When one provision was added to the bill, limiting the power of the federal district courts in the U.S. to make rulings that would affect the whole country, Congressman Flood professed he did not know about the provision because he hadn’t read it. In response citizens yelled “Fascist!” and “Grow a spine!”
CALLING IT LIKE IT IS:
Hope you are having fun labeling the Trump administration assertions with the Big Four: Denial, Attack, Flipping the Script and Crisis Creation. Yesterday Trump used at least two of these ploys and it was fun pointing them out and yelling at the television. Denial!— when Trump was asked by a reporter if he knew that he was being called a TACO, (Trump Always Chickens Out) by Wall Street traders because of his flip-flops on tariffs, Trump said he never heard about it, (although it was in the Wall Street Journal, one of his favorite newspapers). Then he reverted to Attack, telling the reporter who asked about TACO that that was a “nasty question”. Let’s all be on the lookout for these ploys and the other two soon—blaming others for his mistakes, (Flipping the Script) and Creating a Crisis (or Flip-Flopping). They will probably come soon.

Coping with Stress:
I thought it would be helpful to share some of the information in a recent article about how to cope with stress cause by our current political situation. In an article in the “Huffpost” on May 23, 2025, Dr. Jocelyn Sze, an expert on how autocratic administrations gain power by destabilizing the citizenry she states that a very helpful way to combat this is to recognize and label the tools they use:
DENIAL—stating something didn’t happen despite video recordings to the contrary, (or other strong evidence).
ATTACK—(DIVERSION)—Example--Name-calling: When Hillary Clinton said she wanted to raise taxes on the rich and lower them for the middle class and the poor, Trump called her “a nasty woman.”
REVERSAL OF BLAME and FLIPPING THE SCRIPT—Trump blamed Biden for the problems with the economy on April 30th of this year after he caused the stock market to plunge by raising tariffs up to 145% for various countries in Europe, North America and Asia.
EMOTIONAL CHAOS THROUGH CRISIS CREATION. For example, proclaiming a crisis at the border as an excuse to eliminate civil rights under U.S. law. This is also done by CONSTANTLY REVERSING POLICIES. (The tariffs have been proclaimed and retracted over 50 times).
As people affected by these plays, we benefit by naming each play as it comes—DENIAL, ATTACK, REVERSAL OF BLAME, AND CRISIS CREATION. This awareness immunizes us from stress. Then it is important to consistently name the harm and unwaveringly set a boundary against it. Repeating this like a broken record is helpful.
Then we must consistently return to our principles and who we are: STANDING FOR LIBERTY, DEMOCRACY AND HONESTY IN GOVERNMENT. STANDING FOR THE RULE OF LAW AND PROTECTING THE CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL IN OUR COUNTRY. STANDING FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY FOR ALL AMERICANS. STANDING FOR PROTECTION OF OUR SYSTEM OF EDUCATION AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AS WELL AS THE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OF OUR PLANET.
IT HELPS TO PLAY THE LONG GAME. AND WE ARE DOING IT TOGETHER! LET’S GO!
VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT NEW CALL TO ACTION!:
H.R. 1, the House budget reconcilliation bill, has a provision that will limit the enforcement of contempt of court charges. This provision will allow the administration to freely defy court orders and the constitution. We must not let this happen. Call your senators to oppose the bill and this provision and protect the rule of law.

2025-May-22: Summary of Republican 'Big Beautiful Bill' Act passed through the house (click for youtube video)
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Oppose Harmful Provisions in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act
Call your Reps and demand they oppose this destructive bill.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] oppose the budget reconciliation bill and its harmful cuts to vital government programs.
[OPTIONAL]: Specifically, I’m very concerned about… [PICK 1-3 budget provisions]
the cuts to student aid, (and)
the cuts to federal worker retirement benefits, (and)
the defunding of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, (and)
the roll back of the Inflation Reduction Act's urgent climate-focused programs, (and)
the cuts to SNAP, (and)
the partisan attack on federal regulations, (and)
the limit on federal judges’ ability to hold the Trump administration accountable
Congress should pass a fair and responsible budget that helps working families and communities, not one that slashes our benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Call to Action #1
Call your senators -- Republicans AND Democrats -- to demand that they oppose a cryptocurrency bill enabling Trump’s corruption. Indivisibles recently helped derail a toothless bill that would’ve let Trump keep profiting from the presidency via his crypto investments. Now, that bill is on the move again, and we need to let our senators hear us so we can defeat it for good.

3. Call to Action #2
Subject: We will not be complicit in the torture of immigrants!
Pass S.Res.195 NOW!
The rule of law must apply to everyone—especially the president.
The Trump administration has unlawfully deported over 200 immigrants, without charges or trial, without access to family or legal counsel, to a notorious prison in El Salvador where torture is routine.
This is not immigration enforcement. It’s state-sanctioned brutality.
And it’s not just happening—it’s being flaunted. Trump mocked the decision on live television as he openly ignored the Supreme Court’s ruling. This is more than a human rights crisis: it’s a full-blown constitutional emergency.
If a president can disregard court orders and deport legal resident to be tortured abroad, then no one is safe - not immigrants, not critics, not even U.S. citizens! A group of courageous senators- Tim Kaine, Chris Van Hollen, Alex Padilla and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer- are taking a stand with S.Res.195, a privileged resolution demanding immediate action.
TELL YOUR SENATORS: VOTE YES ON S.RES.195
We must restore the rule of law and bring these deported residents home now!

Bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia Home Now!
It’s been 60 days since Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been imprisoned and seen his family!
Two months ago the Trump Administration wrongly deported him to a prison in El Salvador. Despite numerous court orders to get him home- including a unanimous Supreme Court decision-Trump and his lackeys refused to comply.
Our government doesn’t get to grab people off the street and exile them without due process. It’s not who we are. Trump is not a king.
Not another day should go by with Kilmar away from his family. Demand your representatives speak up, speak out and do everything in their power to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home immediately.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
1. Call to Action (These are two really important ones)
A.The Republicans are using the budget reconciliation bill which they are aiming to pass by Memorial Day weekend to fund billionaire tax breaks by cutting millions from Medicaid, causing millions to lose their health insurance coverage. House Republicans are tasked with finding $880 billion from the Energy and Commerce Committee that has jurisdiction over Medicaid.
Medicaid provides health insurance for 72 million low-income and disabled Americans. The program is jointly funded and administered by states/territories and the federal government which pays 90% of Medicaid expansion. (The federal government pays a larger share in poorer states.) Republicans are deciding between two primary options to gut Medicaid: cutting federal funding for Medicaid expansion and imposing work requirements. If the federal government funding rate diminishes, Medicaid will be unsustainable in most states. Already 12 states have a trigger provision to automatically end expansion if federal funding goes below 90%. Republicans may impose burdensome work requirements, even though 92% of non-disabled adult enrollees are already employed, but many may have parttime, low wage or variable-hour jobs that do not offer insurance benefits, and some enrollees are caring for family members' illnesses and disabilities. It is estimated that New Jersey would lose $238 million in revenue in 2026 if cuts proposed to Medicaid and SNAP go through, and 765,000 NJ adults could lose their health insurance.
Script:
"Hi. I am X, a constituent living at Y*, I am calling to urge my Representative (or Senator) to oppose any budget reconciliation bill that cuts or reduces Medicare expansion or imposes work requirements. One estimate by the Center for American Progress (CAP) showed that the states' responses to reducing the federal 90% expansion funding would cause over 34,000 additional deaths annually by endangering health care access for millions of Americans."

B. House Committees are working on their parts of the reconciliation bill that Republicans are pushing through to enact large tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. They are including spending cuts and policy changes, as well as taking advantage of the filibuster-proof reconciliation procedure. They are aiming for a floor vote by Memorial Day weekend.
In addition to gutting Medicaid (see CTA 5/17), planning to sell off public land for oil and timbering (see CTA 5/12), boosting ICE funding (see CTA 5/14) and defunding public education to offer tax scams to pay for private school vouchers (see also the ECCA CTA 5/14.) the Republican wish list includes:
Cutting $351 billion in student aid
Cutting $50 billion from the Federal Employee Retirement System
Slashing the Consumer Protection Bureau by 70%
Dissolving the Public Accounting and Oversight Board
Instituting a new tax on electric and hybrid vehicles
Eliminating funding for green energy
Pulling language from the REINS Act to give Congress new control over federal rulemaking
Spending $25 billion on a "golden dome" missile defense shield (another government handout to Elon Musk)
Limiting federal judges' authority to hold government officials in contempt of court
Script:
"Hi. My name is X, a constituent living at Y*, I urge my (Representative or Senator) to oppose the harmful budget reconciliation bill, particularly because it slashes benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. I am most concerned about (PICK 1-3 ISSUES FROM THE PARAGRAPH ABOVE).

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
We have many many new people. I thought it would help to review why the Calls to Action are important. The Indivisible Guide was written by former congressional staffers. They informed us that every day, staffers tally how many calls have been made to the Senator or Congressman's office about a specific issue. All you have to do is call and state your position. It doesn't have to be a long drawn out discussion. You don't even have to know a lot about the issue. You just need to follow the instructions in the Call to Action. We have lots of evidence that the Calls to Action work and when hundreds of people call about the same issue, the Senator or Congressman takes notice. This is something that takes very little time. I urge you to follow the instructions on the Call to Action and make the call.
Call to Action
On 5/11 Republicans of the House Energy & Commerce committee added language to their portion of the partisan budget reconciliation bill to prohibit state governments from making or enforcing any laws to regulate AI (artificial intelligence) for the next 10 years.
1. Existing laws regulating dangerous aspects of AI such as pornography have already been passed in over 30 states and will not be enforcable under the new language forbidding state regulation of AI.
2. Trump Admin has already rolled back several Biden-era laws regulating the use of AI, choosing tech company rights over consumer rights.
3. Tech safety groups like The Tech Oversight Project are speaking out against taking away states' rights to protect consumers, especially with privacy issues.
4. Ten years is a long time for states to have no say in this new technology especially since we know DOGE has captured verified personal information of Americans for MUSK for his own company xAI.
Script:
"Hi. My name is X, a constituent living at Y*, calling to insist that my (Senator or Representative) oppose the budget reconciliation bill with its provision to block state-level regulation of AI. Some states already protect people from dangerous content on AI. These existing and new laws protecting safety and privacy would not be permissible over 10 long years if the states are not allowed to prioritize the needs of all people over big-tech corporations and billionaire CEOs."

This bill would divert $10 billion annually from public education to fund private school vouchers throughout the nation using a 100% tax credit scheme, allowing wealthy people to fully offset donations to scholarship-granting organizations.
Taxpayers who donate to voucher programs would get 100% of their money back when they file their taxes, making it more lucrative and less likely that people would donate to churches, hospitals, food banks and other charities and receive a smaller tax incentive.
90% or 46 million children now attend public schools. Only 5 million children attend private schools. Every family, except the wealthiest of families, would be eligible to receive these vouchers. Because private schools can choose the students they will accept, students with disabilities and students from low-income communities will be disadvantaged. Both the best and brightest children and billions of dollars will be drained from our public education system, causing larger class sizes, fewer programs and school closures in public education.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Important Stuff! June 14 is “No Kings!” Rally. This is a Nationwide Rally and Philadelphia is the National Anchor! Also, a great Zoom with Jamie Raskin May 28.
NO KINGS - June 14
As we said last week, June 14th is Flag Day. It's also the day Trump has announced a big military parade for his birthday. And it's the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army.
It makes no sense for activists to be in D.C. that day because it would only help make the president's day a success. As a result, Philadelphia has been selected as the NATIONAL ANCHOR EVENT FOR JUNE 14TH! We're very excited about this!
This location has changed because of permitting issues. We will start at Love Park, 15th and JFK Boulevard, at Noon. Then we'll march to the Art Museum, which is where we'll have our rally. Sign up here.
Once you sign up we can update you on any more details as we know them.
Jamie Raskin - May 28
OUR NEXT EXCITING MEETING!
MEET CONGRESSMAN JAMIE RASKIN
We are excited to announce that we will have a virtual Town Hall on May 28th at 5:30 pm. Our special guest will be Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin! He'll give us his thoughts on where we are now, what we must do next, and he'll answer your questions.
We'll meet on Zoom at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, May 28th.
Sign up here.
Don’t forget Cooper River Indivisible is having their own event in South Jersey.
This is the Mobilize link for people to sign up: https://www.mobilize.us/cooperriverindivisible/event/787268/
I have heard from several people that these Thursday zooms with Ezra and Leah are exciting, inspiring and uplifting. Sign up to attend.
Reminder: You’re invited to Thursday's “What’s the Plan” calls!
From the reconciliation fight, to creeping authoritarianism, to immigrant justice, DOGE cuts, and beyond… There's a lot going on and a lot to wrap our heads around each week. It can be confusing. Exhausting. Scary.
That’s why Indivisible’s co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin meet with Indivisibles nationwide every Thursday (at 3pm ET / 12pm PT) to help make sense of the news, draw inspiration from our work, and lay out what’s next for our movement. It’s part pep-rally and part strategy session -- but mainly a lot of Leah and Ezra answering YOUR questions.
Last but not least!
Call to Action - ICE Deportations
Tom Homan, Trump's "border czar" wants to add billions more for ICE deportations. House and Senate Republicans are working on a budget reconciliation bill proposing $90-$175 billion more over 10 years to move ahead with mass deportations, allowing ICE to
1. Expand the use of the Alien Enemies Act to send immigrants unlawfully to other countries without notice or due process.
2. Build a huge immigration jail on Guantanamo Bay.
3. Add 1000's of officers and use police and sheriff's deputies across the USA to arrest and jail more immigrants.
4. Give billions to private contractors to ID targets, jail them in for-profit detention centers and fast track deportations.
We already paid El Salvador $15 million to jail immigrants in their torture prison and this budget reconciliation only requires a simple majority in the House and Senate to pass.
Script: "Hi. My name is X and I am a constituent living at Y*. Vote against any budget reconciliation bill which requires only a simple majority in both the House and Senate to pass. I am against any budget plan that increases ICE funding that will be used to eliminate due process for everyone who is living in the US."

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Reasons our representatives should not support Casey Means, Trump's latest pick and Robert F. Kennedy's choice for the position of US Surgeon General:
1. Casey Means has a lapsed medical license from Oregon and, critical of mainstream medicine, she never finished her medical residency. Instead she opened an alternative medicine practice and founded a glucose monitoring company.
2. As an anti-vaxer, she has promoted lies about life-saving childhood vaccines and should not be involved in the widening measles situation.
3. She has promoted pseudoscientific "cures" like raw milk, and she promotes supplements that she profits from.
Script:
" Hi, my name is X and I am a constituent living in Y. Please do not vote to approve President Trump's and Robert F. Kennedy's pick for Us Surgeon General Casey Means. The US Surgeon General needs to have a current medical license and also to have completed a medical residency. The person in this position also needs to have proven leadership ability. For these reasons, the US Surgeon General should be a licensed physician appointed from the US Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service. It should be someone with specialized medical training or someone with significant experience in public health issues."

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
The House and Senate are advancing the Republican budget reconciliation bill to cut over $4 trillion dollars to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.
On May 6th the House Natural Resources Committee passed their portion of the bill which must be approved by both Houses of Congress. Republicans added a bill amendment to authorize sale of about 11,000 acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah. Other parts of the bill reverse environmental protection laws to allow more timbering and new oil/gas leases. This happens at a time Interior Secretary Doug Burgum gave control of national parks and public lands to an oil executive.
Demand that your members of Congress oppose this reconciliation bill and block the sale of public lands meant for recreation for all Americans, giving them instead to drillers, miners and loggers.
Ex: "Hi, I'm (name), a constituent from (?) calling to urge (see names below) to oppose the budget reconciliation bill provision authorizing the sale of public lands to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, lands which should be preserved from destruction of fossil fuel or timbering industries and protected for the use of all Americans."

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Call your representatives on Monday, May 12, 2025, to urge them to visit and inspect the Delaney detention center in Newark and to object to the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Details below:
From the New York Times, May 9, 2025
Federal officials on Friday arrested Ras J. Baraka, the mayor of Newark, after a confrontation that also involved three members of Congress at a new immigration detention facility that is expected to play a central role in President Trump’s mass deportation effort.

Call your representatives on Monday, May 12, 2025, to urge them to visit and inspect the Delaney detention center in Newark and to object to the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Details below:
Federal officials on Friday arrested Ras J. Baraka, the mayor of Newark, after a confrontation that also involved three members of Congress at a new immigration detention facility that is expected to play a central role in President Trump’s mass deportation effort.
Mr. Baraka, a Democrat who is running for governor of New Jersey, was taken to a separate federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark and charged with trespassing. He was released roughly five hours later and was greeted by a crowd that had grown throughout the afternoon to more than 200 supporters and included candidates for New York City mayor and prominent labor leaders.
Alina Habba, a lawyer for Mr. Trump who is now New Jersey’s interim U.S. attorney, said that Mr. Baraka had been arrested because he had “ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself,” and had chosen “to disregard the law.”
Three members of New Jersey’s Democratic congressional delegation — Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez and LaMonica McIver — were at the building on Friday for what they said was an oversight visit, and were allowed to enter. Federal officials described the lawmakers’ presence as a “stunt.”
Mr. Baraka was allowed past the front gate but was not allowed to accompany the members of Congress inside, according to a video taken by Viri Martinez, an immigration activist who witnessed the arrest.
“Congressmen are different, congresswomen are different,” a Homeland Security Investigations agent told the mayor, the video shows. The agent added: “That is the last warning. You will be placed under arrest.”
After leaving the facility, the members of Congress joined Mr. Baraka in an area inside the front gate, according to the video.
Ms. McIver said that Mr. Baraka then went to a public area where other protesters were gathered. “He walked himself out,” she said.
Mr. Menendez can be heard on video telling Mr. Baraka: “They’re talking about coming back to arrest you.”
The mayor replied: “I’m not on their property. They can’t come out on the street and arrest me.”
Mr. Baraka, 55, was taken into custody by a team of masked federal agents wearing military fatigues while outside the gates in a driveway swarming with protesters and reporters.
Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, called the episode a “bizarre political stunt” in a social media post. She said Ms. Watson Coleman and Mr. Menendez, along with “multiple protesters,” had “holed up in a guard shack.”
Ms. McLaughlin shared a video of the mayor’s arrest that she said showed a “mob” assaulting ICE agents outside the gates.
In an emailed statement, Ms. McLaughlin argued that the facility had proper permits and she provided a list of five immigrants she said were being detained at Delaney Hall and had been accused of serious crimes, including murder and drug trafficking.
Ms. McIver said Mr. Baraka had done nothing wrong before his arrest.
“What we see here is despicable, and we should all be angry,” she said.
Mr. Menendez described Mr. Baraka’s arrest as “an act of intimidation.”
Ms. Watson Coleman said she had been “manhandled” and she described the events as “an abuse of power.”
Other New Jersey Democrats used social media on Friday to criticize the ICE response. Gov. Philip D. Murphy described Mr. Baraka’s arrest as “unjust” and called for his immediate release in a statement.
“Mayor Baraka is an exemplary public servant who has always stood up for our most vulnerable neighbors,” Mr. Murphy wrote.
Senator Andy Kim described the arrest as “shocking” and said that he was in touch with ICE leaders and Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security secretary. Senator Cory Booker wrote that ICE officers should have de-escalated what he called a “disturbing, unnecessary” confrontation.
Late Friday, people waiting in a steady rain outside the ICE office in Newark for Mr. Baraka to be released chanted, “Let him out.”
After his release, Mr. Baraka said he had done nothing wrong.
“What’s happening now in this country, everybody should be scared
of,” he said, adding: “They’re using the courts. They’re using everything else to justify what they’re doing.”

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
We had a great meeting last night! There's a lot going on.
1. Our next big project is Voter Registration for College Students. This will be starting in mid August and go through October. We are going to need a lot of volunteers to man tables at multiple colleges at the same time. If there's any any way, you can keep your availability for the last two weeks in August and the first week in September, that would be very helpful.
2. June 14 “No Kings” is the next big rally sponsored by Indivisible. Because Trump is planning a military parade in DC to celebrate his birthday, the decision was made to make Philadelphia the anchor location for the event! This is very exciting for us. Keep the date open. More information will be forthcoming.
Hot off the presses from Cooper River Indivisible- “I wanted to invite you and your folks to our No Kings March on June 14th. This part isn't public yet, but we're trying to do a big march from Haddonfield to Collingswood. My goal is to get at least 1000 people marching to make it one of our biggest yet”.
This is the Mobilize link for people to sign up: https://www.mobilize.us/cooperriverindivisible/event/787268/
3. Poster party - in order to have a kick ass poster for June 14, we are having another poster party at the Mount Laurel Library on June 5 from 1-3 PM. Janet Rolnick , our art teacher, will be hosting this. If you were at the previous poster party, you know that Janet brings a ton of supplies and was very helpful in getting some amazing posters made. Please RSVP to: eileenghill (at) gmail (dot) com
If there is enough interest in having an evening poster party as well, I will make sure that happens. I need to have at least 5 to 7 people interested in that.
4. Social Media- our social media presence has increased dramatically. We now have a website: SJNOWIndivisible.org. To join our group, all you have to do is click the red subscribe button.
Our Facebook page (SJNOWIndivisible) has become very active. If you are not on Facebook, I highly urge you to get an account. Get someone to help you…I did! Laura Beverage is in charge of this and she has said that she is happy to answer questions. She can be reached at: laurabeverage (at) gmail (dot) com
We also have an instagram account.
5. Postcarding- We are continuing to send postcards to likely Democratic Voters for the NJ November Governor’s race. There will be a big push starting in mid August but you can request postcards over the summer. Contact Sue Anolik: sueanoliksjmoms (at) gmail (dot) com
6. Monday June 9 Moms Demand Action is having a Wear Orange Resource Fair and Concert at Wiggins Park at the Camden Waterfront. We will have a table at this event. The Resource Fair starts at 6 PM and the Concert, a Michael Jackson Tribute Band, starts at 8 PM. Last year there were 2,000 people at this event. It's a good time to get new members and support a great cause.
Questions? Email sueanoliksjmoms (at) gmail (dot) com
7. Summer Rally and Concert- John Stevens is planning a group event sometime this summer. It’s a fun way for our group to get together and we can use our Act Blue money for this. He will need help. Please contact him if you are interested in helping with this event. John is a dynamo and with your help, I am sure this is going to happen.
If you want to help contact: johnstevens8 (at) comcast (dot) net
8. Merchandising- I would like to have T-shirts (and hats for Ralph) made for our group. They would say : “SJNOWIndivisible” with our logo on the front and “Ask me” on the back. I need a volunteer to make this happen. Please contact me at: eileenghill (at) gmail (dot) com

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
There are now multiple ways to donate money to us. We are a self funded organization and we can only do as much as we are funded to do. We need money to pay for postcards, supplies, room rental fees, food and a host of other things.
PLEASE SAVE THIS INFORMATION
We now have our own dedicated Act Blue link that goes directly to us. What would be most helpful right now is a small (can be as small as $2-$5) recurring donation through our Act Blue link. This gives us an ongoing revenue source. You can access the Act Blue link by going to our webpage at SJNOWindivisible.org and clicking on the red donation link.
Use of this money is restricted to Federal Nonpartisan activities. We obviously do a lot of State and partisan activities. We therefore need other sources of money.
You can donate to us via:
Venmo @Eileen-Hill-44
This money goes directly into the SJNOWIndivisible checking account. This is a donation only account used only for this purpose.
Cash or check
Make check out to: “SJNOWIndivisible”
You can put everything in the envelope in the gray bin on my porch (email me to let me know it is there)

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
The next monthly meeting is tomorrow Wednesday May 7 at 7pm at the Marlton Middle School All Purpose Room. Doors open at 6:30pm. Bring a nonperishable food item for the Food Bank and a few dollars to cover the cost of the room.
We have a lot to discuss so please plan to be there! We have a number of new projects to introduce.
The next huge action planned by Indivisible is June 14 “No Kings!.” Indivisible has decided that being in DC on June 14 will amplify Trump’s BD celebration so they have selected Philadelphia as the National Anchor Event. How great is that? Details will be coming. In addition, Cooper River Indivisible is planning an event in NJ.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
May 2, 2025: The Senate is expected to vote on Bisignano’s confirmation during the week of May 5th.
The Senate Finance Committee held hearings on the nomination of Wall Street executive Frank Bisignano to lead the Social Security Administration (SSA). Bisignano has described himself as “fundamentally a DOGE person" and stated that his priority will be to use A.I. to hunt for the so-called “fraud” in the system that Elon Musk and Trump are fixated on. This has been identified as false by industry experts.
Democratic lawmakers are concerned that DOGE’s goal is to cause the SSA to fail, paving the way for privatization of the system. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who sits on the Senate Finance Committee, and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), wrote a letter stating, “We are gravely concerned about the current trajectory of the SSA, and more specifically, that those charged with leading it might profit off its destruction.” They raised concerns about DOGE-led changes that would “deprive Americans of Social Security benefits they earned and need.”
Bisignano’s confirmation would put the lives and financial stability of 73 million Americans who currently receive monthly retirement, survivor, and disability payments. AARP leaders say their members are terrified of the potential failure of a system that is already in chaos. It is critical that the committee reject Bisignano’s nomination and the destruction of the functioning of the SSA.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [MUNICIPALITY].
I'm calling to demand Senator Cory Booker reject the nomination of Frank Bisignano to lead the Social Security Administration. He is a Wall Street executive and DOGE ally who will put the financial stability of 73 million Americans at risk to push the agency toward greedy privatization.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
May 7 Monthly Meeting
Reminder: Our next Monthly Meeting will occur at 7pm, Wednesday, May 7 at the Marlton Middle School All Purpose Room.
May 1 May Day Rally at Philadelphia City Hall
-Kudos to Many SJNOW Indivisibles That Attended This Large Protest!
This Rally in Philly was part of a May Day National Day if Action, sponsored by Indivisible and other groups, that included events occurring in hundreds of locations across the nation.
One theme of the Philly Rally is that we are standing united. We're organizing for a world where every family has housing, healthcare, fair wages, union protection, and safety-regardless of race, zipcode, or immigration status.
Another theme is that we will not stand down from Trump/Musk/Billionaires efforts aimed at defunding our schools, privatizing public services, and attacking immigrant families with fear and violence.
Senator Bernie Sanders was the main speaker at this event. His message to all of us going forward is that "our job is twofold." Senator Sanders said, "First, we have to fight Trump every single day. But secondly, we have to have a vision as to where our country goes in the future". He also said that "an economy in which the rich get richer and working people struggle should not be defended".
There was lots of live TV news coverage of this Rally, both on local Philly TV news stations and on national TV (MSNBC). The coverage video showed lots of great signs created by rally attendees, aerial shots of a huge crowd at City Hall and some of the streets around City Hall, and some clips from Senator Sanders' speech.
NEW. SAVE JUNE 14 DATE! INDIVISIBLE ORGANIZING A "NO KINGS" NATIONAL MOBILIZATION
-More details will be forthcoming in future weeks
-Why June 14?
Donald Trump is planning a military parade in Washington, D.C. on Flag Day -- his birthday. This display of might is intended to intimidate opponents and solidify his image as a strongman on our dime, and we won’t stand by while that happens.
While Trump will be busy making the day all about him, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day. Thousands of people will come together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption.
-What is the Indivisible Message for June 14?
Trump and MAGA Republicans have pushed for cuts to crucial programs that are vital to American families, like SNAP, Social Security, and Medicaid--yet he's frivolously spending millions of dollars on a military parade!
We're going to hold him accountable. We remain united against Trump's overreach and firmly say there are NO KINGS in America.
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Reminder: May 1st Meeting Changed
The monthly meeting May 1st at 7pm has been changed to 7pm Wednesday May 7th at the Marlton Middle School All Purpose Room.
We changed it so people can go to the 4-7 PM, May 1st rally at City Hall in Philadelphia. Bernie Sanders will be speaking at the rally.
Call to Action
Urge Your Members of Congress (MOCs) to Hold in May In-Person Town Halls in the 3 NJ GOP Congressional Districts
In April, many SJNOW Indivisibles attended Congressman Herb Conaway's and Senator Kim's Town Halls. Based on our Indivisibles speaking up at these Town Halls, support from others at these Town Halls, and our previous Calls to Action to offices of these 2 individuals, both Conaway and Kim have agreed in public to hold Town Halls in one or more of the 3 NJ GOP Congressional Districts.
The main topic of these future Town Halls will be opposition to Trump/GOP plans to enact massive cuts in Medicaid and SNAP (affecting over 2M people in NJ) to fund huge tax cuts for the Wealthy and Corporations.
Of course, the three NJ GOP Congressmen in these Districts, Van Drew (CD-2), Smith (CD-4), and Kean Jr (CD-7), have been hiding from their constituents, and they have not and will not hold any In-Person Town Halls during this year.
It is now May. We need to call these 2 MOCs (Conaway and Kim) to urge them to follow through on their Town Hall public promises-and to schedule and publicize these events in May well in advance! (We know that Congressman Conaway is planning to hold a Town Hall, possibly in Brick, in Rep Chris Smith's CD-4 District.)
We also need to call Senator Booker's offices to encourage him to hold in May Town Halls in one or more NJ GOP Districts. Finally, if CongNorcross is still recovering from an illness, we should encourage his Staff to possibly do this as well, say in Van Drew's CD-2 District.
Why is doing this particular Call to Action so important for Indivisibles to do and worthwhile to do multiple times in the next few months?
Several reasons: (1) the stakes could not be higher for avoiding intense pain for millions of New Jerseyans via Medicaid cuts, SNAP cuts, nursing home and hospital closures, rising healthcare costs, AND a projected $5B hole in the NJ State Budget; (2) constituents in the 3 NJ GOP Districts need to hear the truth from their Senators and another Congressman about the toxic nature of this upcoming Trump Tax Scam Bill for Billionaires; (3) the GOP has a very slim majority in the House, so flipping 1 or more NJ GOP votes for this Bill would be huge [Smith voted against ACA repeal in 2017 and Van Drew is one of 12 GOP Reps in Congress that have written that they oppose any cuts to Medicaid (we shall see)]; and (4) even if all 3 NJ GOP Reps eventually vote for this awful bill, the Town Halls and publicity efforts associated with these NJ GOP Districts will help us to get more Dems and Independents to vote to elect a NJ Dem Governor and Assembly this year and to help flip the House in 2026.
So please make these calls today to Kim, Booker, and the offices of your appropriate House MOCs.

100 Days of Grassroots and Other Trump Defiance
-Defiance from Indivisible and SJNOW Indivisible
April 29 marked the 100th day of Trump’s second term. In that short amount of time we’ve
seen him attack our basic constitutional rights like birthright citizenship and due process, shutter federal agencies and programs that millions of people depend on, and target marginalized communities across the country.
But we’re also seeing a growing backlash against this administration. Trump’s approval rating is historically low. Polls show people disapprove of his policies on almost every issue including trade and the economy -- and that’s before the real impacts of tariffs and empty shelves hits most Americans.
This shift in the political climate didn’t just happen -- the backlash is shaped and driven by the grassroots. Every one of you SJNOW Indivisibles, who showed up to Sen Kim's district office, attended one or more Kim, Conaway, or Norcross Town Halls (successfully urging 2 of them to hold additional Town Halls in the 3 NJ GOP Congressional Districts), took to the streets in Mt. Laurel, Cherry Hill (Tesla), Philly, or elsewhere to protest massive GOP cuts to Medicaid and authoritarian Trump/Musk actions, registered many new student voters, and canvassed "Missing NJ Dem Voters", played a crucial role in building the backlash that we see today.
And your courage has been contagious. A rising faction of the Democratic Party is beginning to fight back. Universities, like Harvard, are beginning to hold the line against Trump’s bullying. Whistleblowers inside the government are speaking out. And folks who’ve never attended a South Jersey protest in their lives are out in the streets.
So to every one of our SJNOW Indivisibles, who has called your Members of Congress, participated in a Hands Off! protest, shared a call to action on social media, wrote many postcards to register new voters in NJ, and joined our group (increasing our active membership over tenfold to over 170 people), we want to say THANK YOU.
