2025-Aug-30: College Voter Registration Info
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
We have new members joining all the time. We now have 348. The next monthly meeting is Monday Sept 15 at 7pm at the Mount Laurel Community Center.
Dave Lipshutz and I are doing a College Voter Registration Training at the Mount Laurel Library on Tuesday Sept 2 at 7pm.
Sign up is:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0548ACAA29A0FFC07-58192393-voter
Here’s where we stand with the colleges:
The Rowan Sign up is full.
We have given away Monmouth University and Fairleigh Dickinson because they are too far away.
We have one session scheduled at Middlesex Community College in Edison. We may have more.
We will definitely have dates at TCNJ.
There are 5 other colleges who have said they are interested that haven’t gotten back to me yet. This is a very busy time for them.
My gut feeling is that we will have sign ups for a few more colleges.
College Voter Registration is a little different from regular Voter Registration.
We plan to do a lot of Voter Registration between now and the midterms. If you take this training, you are qualified to do ALL Voter Registrations.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
1. The Cooper River Indivisible meeting last night was well intended. It was great to see so many Indivisibles and to hear from Lt. Governor candidate Dr. Dale Caldwell on his background and plans to work with Mikie Sherrill on the issues that affect NJ residents. And I'm sure he got the message that we need to see Mikie in South Jersey.
2. At the request of our friends in Moms Demand Action, the theme for the Mount Laurel rally this afternoon will be to push for a ban on assault weapons. See below for details on time and place.
2.There is a Voter Registration Training session at the Mount Laurel Library on Tuesday Sept 2 from 7-8pm. Eileen will be running it. Please sign up below If there’s a good chance you are coming since there is limited room capacity.
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0548ACAA29A0FFC07-58192393-voter
We would like at least 2 people with experience to be there to talk to the group. email me directly if you can come. eileenghill at gmail dot com.
3. We still need some people to drop off State voter registration forms. They need to print them and drop them off in the gray bin on Eileen's porch. Any amount is fine.
https://nj.gov/state/elections/assets/pdf/forms-voter-registration/68-voter-registration-english.pdf
4. 1 Million Rising: I will be holding a training for hosts Wednesday Sept 3 at 7:00 via Zoom. The goal of this effort is to get additional people involved in various resistance efforts, and get to the 3.5% participation ratio that we think we need to tilt the scales. If you're interested contact Rich Cleaver richcl205@gmail.com 609-304-4497.
5. There are lots of canvassing opportunities this weekend and going forward through e-Day. Contact Pete Bilizarian at pbilizar@aol.com if you're interested in participating. Pete can provide resources and pair you with experienced canvassers if desired.
6. There are several local Labor Day events - check Mobilize.com for one near you.
To quote Eileen Hill: "Doing nothing is not an option"!'
Enjoy the weekend.
SUPPORT LABOR UNIONS ON LABOR DAY!
Join us Monday, September 1 to support our unions at this time when they are under threat. We'll meet to join our friends from Peace, Justice and Sustainability Now and other groups also supporting this. We'll be on Delaware Avenue near Washington Avenue (in the abandoned railroad tracks) as the a group of unions organized by AFSCE District Council 47 launches their Labor Day parade down Delaware Ave (the street will be closed). Bring your signs - showing support for unions or against the regime that wants to abolish them.
NEW TIMES -- The groups will assemble between 9:30 and 10:00 and the parade begins at 10:00. This is on the abandoned tracks across from the Sheetmetal Workers Union hall on Delaware Ave. See this map for details.
Then we'll head to the Monday's at McCormick's protest at 20th and Market Streets, which starts at 12:00 Noon. See you there!
WE ARE AMERICA MARCH - SEPTEMBER 6-19
This march is from Philadelphia to D.C. and you can sign up for an hour, a day, or the entire trip. They have the meals and lodging already taken care of. Join us for the kickoff at Independence Mall on September 6th at 9:30 AM. Find out more here.
The group is marching because the promises of the Constitution are being broken. But across the country, people aren’t standing by - they’re standing up.
As the organizers describe it:
They’re dismantling the Constitution. We’re marching to save it.
The American promises of liberty and justice are being broken. We march to defend them.
Our government works for us—not above us. We the People are taking our country back.
Where and when: Saturday morning Sept 6 at 9:30 at Independence Mall. So come out and cheer them on!
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Subject: Instructions to RCBC Volunteers
Thank you for signing up for a shift or shifts for SJNOW’s College Voter Registration Project at RCBC- both Mount Laurel and Mount Holly campuses.
Some of you did this at RCBC in the spring for the primary. Sone of you are new. It’s a good mix.
I will be overseeing the effort again, and will be on site most of the time.
Some important instructions:
1) This is required to be non-partisan. We can’t wear or say anything that advocates for a party or candidate or issue. We have to file all registrations, even Republican. BUT we choose venues like this because they’re likely to skew Democratic. The registrations in the spring certainly did.
2) Please familiarize yourself with the NJ Voter Registration Application, it’s easily found online.
3) We can offer factual information. “Who’s the Democrat for Governor?” “Mikie Sherrill” We can suggest that students check out candidates’ websites.
4) We offer paper Applications and QR Codes, which take a student to an online registration form.
5) A student can also check his or her registration status through the QR Code, I’ll show you how.
6) We encourage students to fill out the Applications in front of us, so we can make sure they’re done correctly- but if students want to take a blank Application or QR Code with them, that’s fine, too.
7) We approach students with a clipboard and say “Excuse me, are you registered to vote in NJ?”
Whether they are or not, we remind them of the upcoming Nov 4 Governor and Assembly election.
8) Dose Of Reality- this is a low return activity. Students will not be lining up eagerly to register. Many will brush you off. Many will say they’re already registered. Some will be rude. Most will be courteous. You might get 20 or 30 of these in a row. But then- it always happens- someone WILL be interested- and that person is worth GOLD. Every registration in an off year, low turnout election is valuable. So is reminding students about an upcoming election.
9) Dose Of Reality II- we political nerds are the exception. We follow races closely. Most people out there are clueless. They might not even know there’s a Governor race. We’re there to educate and let them know it’s important to vote.
10) We offer candy and other giveaways to attract students. Any student can take a giveaway- we can’t offer any payment of any kind only to people who register. Eileen has purchased a lot of candy that we’ll use, but feel free to bring your own.
11) Legal requirements to register to vote in NJ are pretty simple - you must be 17 years old (although you can’t vote until 18), you must live in the voting district at least 30 days before the election, and you can’t be incarcerated for a felony conviction.
12) At Mount Laurel, we’ll be in the Student Success Center, which faces Route 38. Plenty of parking around the building. Go in the main entrance, our table will be to the left.
Im not familiar with Mount Holly yet, will check it out and let you know.
13) We’ll supply all the forms and clipboards.
My cell is available in the sjnowindivisible email. Please provide me with yours so I can call you if necessary. Otherwise, email with any questions is fine. delipshutz at comcast dot net
Looking forward to working with you to get young people into our democracy and to save our State!
Dave Lipshutz

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
If you haven't signed up for the Thursday Voter Registration training sessions consider coming to the one I am doing at the Mount Laurel Library Sept 2 at 7pm. This should be short.

There are a few idiosyncrasies about registering college students that you really need to know. I did open this up to CRI and ATNJ because I expect them to be helping us. The room only holds 50 so you could be shut out. Only take a spot if you defintiely plan to be there.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
1.College Voter Registration is starting up Sept 2. Clear your schedules the first few weeks in September/early October. There are still slots available, especially in early October. Note that some of these will be at the Rowan campus in Mount Laurel, some will be at the Mount Holly campus. This is a great opportunity to register those young voters we need for November!
On Wednesday Aug 27, the remaining slots go to ActionTogetherNJ.
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0548ACAA29A0FFC07-58107024-college
There are 344 people in this group. We are going to need a lot of people to do College Voter Registration. We are hoping to get slots at Rutgers Camden, TCNJ, and possibly others.I am grateful to the 27 people who signed up for Rowan but we are going to need more of you to do this. If you work full time or are actively involved in Mikie Sherrill’s campaign, you are off the hook. This is a pretty easy way to help her win Nov 4. I am really hoping you guys step up and fill all of the slots that are offered.
2. Fight back against the Texas Redistricting. Call to Action
Call Gov Phil Murphy 609-292-6000 and say, "Hi, my name is (your name) and I am a resident of NJ. Please publicly threaten responsive redistricting if Republicans gerrymander mid decade. I understand the constitutional and timing hurdles, but the public threat still shifts the risk calculation for the GOP. Thank you"
3. Hands Across New Jersey: On Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, September 17, 2025, thousands of New Jerseyans will join hands from Fort Lee to Washington Crossing Historic Park—across Revolutionary War battlefields, Wawas, diners, small towns, and national parks—to form a living chain of resistance against authoritarianism. The route honors the bravery and resolve of those who fought to build a democracy by and for the people. With the same irrepressible spirit and commitment of our founders, we will retrace this route to defend our Constitution, the foundation of our democracy.
Info/signup here: Hands Across New Jersey, happening Sept 17: https://www.handsacrossnj.org/
4. The Cherry Hill Visibility Brigade is coordinated by Marty Hagerty, and info/updates on this are on the Cherry Hill Visibility Brigade Facebook page. If you're not a member, you have to request to join the group.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Another successful meeting last night. The next meeting is Monday Sept 15 at 7pm at the Mount Laurel Community Center.
The October meeting is WEDNESDAY Oct 15 at the Mount Laurel Library- notice change in day of the week and location!
I encourage you to come to the meetings. There are things that happen there that you cannot get by email. For example, I gave out business cards that you can give whenever you talk to a friend, acquaintance or work colleague. My newest suggestion is to talk to anyone you interact with who's 18 to 22 years old. For example, I talked to our waitress. Ask them how they think things are going in the country. I can promise you they will immediately respond with a horrified, helpless expression. These people are looking for a lifeline. Tell them about Indivisible and give them our card. I ordered another thousand and I will be putting them in the gray bin on my porch. I will email you all when they are available for pick up. This is how we grow the group.
At the meetings I also frequently give you tips and tools to survive the times we are living in.
Our primary job right now is to elect the Democratic governor November 4. We're working hard on Mikie Sherrill's campaign with canvassing, phone banking, and postcarding.
If you're interested in canvassing or phone banking contact Pete Bilazarian: pbilazar@aol.com or Rich Cleaver: richcl205@gmail.com.
If you want to send postcards to register new Democratic voters, contact Susan Anolik: sueanoliksjmoms@gmail.com
There is a legitimate website for discounted stamps: Do not use other discounted websites. Many are fraudulent.
We talked about National Indivisible's new One Million Rising initiative. We are going to pressure the organizations and institutions that are supporting Trump. An exciting new one is the Fox Takedown Protests. www.foxtakedown.com We are going for the head of the snake.
The first one is Friday, August 22 from 10 AM to 12 PM. The location is Fox Philadelphia WTXF, 330 Market St., Philadelphia. The host contact information is Demandtruth2025@yahoo.com.
For all information about the One Million Rising initiative, go to no kings.org/rise
We are asking people to sign up to host gatherings of anywhere from 2 people on up. The idea is to collect your neighbors, acquaintances, work colleagues, etc. and give them information about what's going on and what Indivisible is doing about it. The goal is to get more people involved in the movement. For more information about this, contact Rich Cleaver: RICHCL2025 at gmail dot com.
Another new idea we had was to form a music social club. This would be for people who are interested in seeing live music. It would not be on a regular basis, but it's a way to get our group together with a common interest. If you know a lot about what live music is available in the area, please contact me at eileenghill at gmail dot com.

Call to Action
Demand that Gov Murphy refuse to implement Trump's racist Executive Order to forcibly institutionalize homeless people and those with substance abuse and mental illness.
~ On July 24th, Trump signed an executive order (Ending Crime and Disorder on America's Streets) that instructs state and local governments to forcibly institutionalize unhoused people and those with substance abuse and mental illness.
~ This directive will incentivize local governments to criminalize homelessness, potentially without due process.
~ The definition of mental illness and substance use is vague, leading to the detainments of a much larger number of people and may violate medical privacy rights.
~ The order will prioritize funding for states and cities that maximize criminal enforcement and will defund harm reduction and housing-first programs.
Please call Governor Murphy and urge him to refuse to implement the Trump administration's involuntary civil commitment executive order. We should focus on data-driven humane solutions, not forcibly locking up and violating the rights of the unhoused and mentally ill.
Governor Phil Murphy 609-292-6000

THURS, August 14, 9 AM-4 PM, Social Security 90th Birthday Bash & Rally at the Mount Laurel Social Security Field Office, 532 Fellowship Road, Ste E, 08054
Please feel free to bring signs of gratitude and well wishes for 90 Years of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its employees! Sign up to attend at
https://actionnetwork.org/events/nj-mount-laurel-field-office-birthday-bash
This year marks Social Security’s 90th birthday, a milestone worth celebrating. But instead of honoring this vital program, recent attacks from the Trump administration and DOGE have made it harder for Social Security workers to do their jobs and have degraded service for millions of Americans who count on these benefits.
We’re ready to fight back. That’s why on Thursday, August 14, SJNOW Indivisible is joining actions organized by workers with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the Alliance for Retired Americans, and allies outside Social Security Administration offices across NJ. Together, we’ll show our support for the workers who keep this program running and stand against harmful rule changes that would weaken the services we all depend on.
Come wish the Social Security Administration (SSA) a very happy 90th birthday: sign the birthday poster, get information about Social Security Worker issues, and more! This is a casual, all day event. Please stop by between hours of operation and celebrate with AFGE Local 2369!

4. Call to Action: Fight Racist, Anti-Immigrant, & Anti-DEI Terms or Conditions within Grants of Federal DHS, HHS, and Other Agencies to Religious and Other Institutions
I know that another round of Federal National Security grants is coming up shortly. It feels important that we understand that the current administration has made some changes in what we will need to consent to in order to receive it this round.
According to the piece linked below, the United Church of Christ is advising its churches that grant recipients must now, according to the terms of the Federal grants, agree to: "cooperate with immigration officials, not engage in or promote programs that engage in DEI, DEIA, or ‘discriminatory equity ideology’ within the meaning of the Executive Order, in violation of anti-discrimination laws, and not participate in discriminatory prohibited boycotts relating to Israel.
HHS is also requiring certification of compliance with not engaging in DEI activity.
The terms and conditions of ANY federal funding MUST be carefully examined to ensure that accepting a grant does make the church’s ministry an instrument of the state by dictating what religious activities the church can engage in and with whom the church can associate."
Some synagogues are publicly stating that they are not applying for these grants for these purposes. Others are engaged in discussion about what to do. I encourage us to research this and make a values based decision on how we wish to proceed.
In other words, if you want a grant from Homeland Security, HHS, or FEMA, you must cooperate with ICE and with racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, and homophobic Anti-DEI Ideology.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!
Please make your phone calls and let our representatives know that they must FIGHT against it!!

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Many of us have been wondering when the public might feel concern about Donald Trump, particularly his base, which has supported him despite numerous scandals and errors by his administration in the past seven months. People wondered, what would it take?
However, new polls coming out in the past week reflect that the public is indeed concerned about the president’s performance, putting Donald Trump’s approval rating near record lows, with an “erosion of support” among one of the president’s most reliable groups of supporters: men. Trump’s approval rating with men is down to 39%, dropping nearly ten points since April. His rating with women is down to 35%.
This is the first crack in Trump’s base that has been reflected in the polls. A University of Massachusetts Amherst survey also found public support had dropped six percent since April, giving him a meager 38% approval rating. 58%, almost six in ten Americans, disapproved of his job performance, following a string of major national polls with similarly low approval ratings.
A recent AP/NORC poll shows that the public’s confidence in Trump as a chief executive is shattering. Half of those polled said Trumps policies have “done more to hurt” than to help them and only one quarter of those polled said the policies have helped them. Trump failed to earn majority approval on any of the issues in the poll, including the economy, immigration or cutting government spending. His approval rating in the most recent Gallup poll is only 37%. Among Independents, his rating is down to 29%. As a result, his ratings are at a historically low point for a newly elected president.
The UMass Amherst polls found that some of the reasons his net approval rating has dropped to minus 20%, was due to discontent, focused especially on his handling of Immigration, tariffs, inflation and the Jeffrey Epstein crisis. 63% believe he is hiding information about Epstein.
Americans are becoming aware that consumer spending is well below last year. More than half of Americans say the cost of groceries is a major source of stress in their life right now. Yale’s Budget Lab finds that Americans are dealing with an average effective tariff rate of 18.3%, the highest since 1934. This will cost the average American household an additional $2400 this year.
This might explain why, when Trump was observed wandering around the roof of the White House this week, Jimmy Fallon said of the people reacting to the event: “Everyone was like, ‘Don’t do it , sir! Your approval rating isn’t that bad!”
Dear Indivisibles,
If you have heard the Indivisible training, One Million Rising, the goal of the Resistance is to get the pillars of power supporting the government, including the faith based community and the media, to challenge those in power. Last week an organization called the Worker’s Circle gathered together outside the gates of the immigrant detention center know as “Alligator Alcatraz”—THE FIRST INTERFAITH VIGIL EVER HELD THERE. THEY MADE HEADLINES:
Interfaith Prayer Vigil Held Outside “Alligator Alcatraz” Amid Reports of Hunger Strike Inside the Facility”
Dozens of leaders of faith and conscience and community members traveled from across Florida to pray for change and demand dignity for the people detained in this notorious facility. They came to send a message, to the detainees inside, to ICE, to politicians, that they are not forgotten and that they will not accept such cruelty in our country. Each week, they vow to organize vigils outside of Alligator Alcatraz until it is shut down. They also demand that democracy be restored. Their goal is to continue to resist ICE’s machinery of cruelty.
IN OTHER GOOD NEWS
The Trump regime has withdrawn half of the National Guard soldiers from Los Angeles to date, removing 2000 soldiers from the city. The withdrawal of soldiers is continuing.
The Wall Street Journal, formerly a Trump ally, continues to print anti-Trump headlines, this week criticizing Trump for seeing emergencies everywhere in order to justify exercising extreme executive power where it was not justified. Recently the paper published Trump’s letter to Jeffrey Epstein on Epstein's birthday, containing a lascivious drawing by Trump.
Takes on Trump’s Appearance on the Roof of the White House this Week.
Stephen Colbert opened Tuesday’s (August 5) episode of The Late Show by focusing on the latest Donald Trump drama, referring to the president’s most recent actions as just “plain dumb.” He stated: “Late this morning, the president held an impromptu press conference from a highly unusual location.” The late-night host then threw to footage of Trump on the roof of the White House. In the clip, a reporter is heard shouting, “Sir, why are you on the roof?” “That’s not a question you hear asked of a world leader that often,” Colbert said quipping, “It’s right up there with, Your majesty, where are your pants?” Colbert added, pretending to shout at Trump “How are you the guy in charge? Why do we have to pretend it’s normal when an old man wanders around a roof and shouts at us?”
Jimmy Fallon, on his own late night show, said of the event: “Everyone was like, ‘Don’t do it , sir! Your approval rating isn’t that bad!”

SEEING MORE SIGNS OF THE RESISTANCE
On many different levels, signs of the Resistance are showing more and more:
A House Republican from Nebraska, Mike Flood, held a town hall yesterday in which he was immediately booed by the attendees only seconds into his speech, according to the NY Times. People took him to task for the cuts to Medicaid, SNAP food benefits and other programs in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”. When Mr. Flood said there was misinformation being spread about the bill and that it would bring money to Nebraska hospitals, multiple people shouted, "You are a liar! Liar! Liar!” During the session, which lasted over an hour, audience members shouted, “Tax the rich” and at the conclusion of the town hall, they repeatedly chanted, “Vote him out.”
The only other vulnerable House member to hold a town hall in a district targeted by Democrats, Bryan Steil of Wisconsin, was also booed and jeered when he tried to hold a town hall on August 1st. Mr. Steil was booed for defending Trump’s tariffs and trade policies. Other Republicans have been holding only tele-town halls, which allow time for attendees’ comments to be cut off before they are heard by the rest of the audience.
In other news, candidates for Governor in New Jersey, (Mikie Sherrill) and in Virginia, (Abigail Spanberger), are ahead of their Republican rivals in recent polls. Ms. Sherrill is eight points ahead of her Republican opponent, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson poll held in early August, with higher ratings among younger voters under thirty, voters of retirement age, Hispanic and Black voters. According to a Stim Sight Research poll conducted for Insider NJ during the same week, Ms. Sherrill is six percentage points ahead of her opponent. More than half of New Jersey voters (54%), said they agree that the Republican Party seems “too concerned with catering to Donald Trump,” with 86% saying Sherrill was most likely to stand up to the president.
Notably, Republicans have joined Democrats in congress to force the House Oversight committee to subpoena the Department of Justice files for the Epstein trials. Three Republicans broke ranks with Trump to join two House members to push for the subpoena, asking for the documents by August 19th of this month.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Here is some good news regarding the fight against the Trump administration’s authoritarian attempt to harm American democracy.
THE EXPANSION OF THE INDIVISIBLE MOVEMENT IS ACCELERATING
Since January, when the Trump administration took office, the number of new local indivisible groups has doubled and new groups are being founded daily according to the National Indivisible organization. Every state and congressional district has one or more Indivisible group with the exception of only five districts out of the 435 districts in the United States. There are over 2500 active local Indivisible groups at this time and the number of Indivisible members has QUADRUPLED in this six month period. There is now an average of five Indivisible groups for every congressional district in our country!
CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS STAND UP TO THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION, FILING A LAWSUIT TO ACCESS ICE FACILITIES
Yesterday, congressional Democrats filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for barring access by members of congress to inspect ICE facilities, which reportedly have subjected their inmates to inhumane conditions. This lawsuit may be the first such action by congressional Democrats against this regime, although Democrats have recently submitted amicus briefs in support of some other lawsuits (which number over 200 in total). Under federal law, congressional representatives are specifically entitled to inspect such facilities.
The lawsuit is an encouraging sign that Democrats in Congress are increasingly standing up to the Trump regime.
VOTER REGISTRATION HAS NOW FLIPPED BACK TOWARDS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Americans’ party affiliation has flipped back toward the Democratic Party after the Republican Party held advantages for most of 2023 and 2024. The current movement in party preferences is primarily driven by a greater share of political independents saying they lean toward the Democratic Party in the second quarter of 2025. An average of 46% of U.S. adults identified as Democrats or said they identified as Democrats or said they are Independents who lean toward the Democratic Party, while 43% identified as Republicans or said they lean Republican, according to the most recent Gallup poll.
