Next meeting Monday, Feb 9 at 7 pm - see NEWS for info
The next monthly meeting is Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 pm at the Mount Laurel Community Center. Doors open at 6:30 pm for coffee, cake and mingling! New people welcome.
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
THIS IS IMPORTANT AND URGENT! The main results of the Dec 29 movement-wide call (as reported by Pete Bilazarian) to catch many activists up on where the NJ Immigrant Trust Act (ITA) bill and its principles stand are as follows.
The current 2-year NJ Legislative Session ends on Jan 12, which will be a Bill Voting Day and the last possible day for this Session to pass the ITA (or possibly 3 separate new Bills that cover the contents of the ITA).
The NJ State Assembly seems to be on board with the ITA, since Speaker Coughlin recently had an ICE Raid in his district. So the primary focus now is on the NJ Senate.
The main thing people need to do now to help in this last ditch effort to pass the ITA is the following. Show up in person at the State House in Trenton on Jan 5, 6, and 8, when there are scheduled Committee Hearings that must first pass the ITA, and lobby in person their State Senators and Assembly Members.
So any SJNOW Indivisible Members, who can make it to the Trenton State House on any of these 3 dates, should do so.
Phone calls to legislative offices will not be very useful at this point.
The next monthly meeting is Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 pm at the Mount Laurel Community Center. Doors open at 6:30 pm for coffee, cake and mingling! New people welcome. Wear your new T shirts and sweatshirts!!
Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
I picked up the personalized T shirts etc. Pick up from the gray bin on my porch as soon as you can. The bin is overstuffed.
Anytime starting now until Jan 11.
If you live more than 30 minutes away and are coming to the Jan 12 meeting, I will bring it to the meeting but you MUST TELL ME!! This stuff is heavy!!

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Below, we repost this important new action by Cooper River Indivisible to lobby our representatives for passage of the crucial NJ Immigrant Trust Act.
The NJ Immigrant Trust Act is incredibly important to protect both immigrants as well as New Jersey citizens. We have a very short period of time to get the act passed during this lame duck session, so it's an all -hands-on-deck moment across the state.
Volunteers are needed to go to Trenton together and lobby for this bill. You do not need to have any lobbying experience -- nor is an understanding of how the legislature works or the bill itself essential. We will learn together. I've only lobbied a few times -- and we will be led by a seasoned organizer. There are organizations that will serve as the lead each day, and you will be connected with them. Getting numbers of people is very important — even just to be a presence. And remember: the legislators work for us.
The times for the event say 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but it is quite possible that the lobbying will only last a few hours. If that happens, we will change our schedule accordingly. We will organize carpooling, too.
The trips have been interesting and fun. (Really). Join us. Sign up: Cooper River Indivisible (crinj.org.)

If you can’t make it to Trenton to lobby in person call Assembly Speaker Coughlin @ (732)855-7441 and Senate President Scutari @ (732)827-7480 tell them to bring this bill to the floor for a vote! This is incredibly important.
MORE NEWS FROM THE RESISTANCE
Recently, Congress and the media have accelerated their resistance to the concentration of power in the executive branch, as the government’s support among the public has plummeted. The lower courts of the federal judiciary have continued to uphold the law against the depredations of the DOJ.
MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ARE FINALLY SPEAKING OUT AND EXERCISING THEIR AUTHORITY
After largely resigning their role as the chief lawmaker for the United States to the executive branch in the past year, the Congress has recently come to life, while the President’s polls have dropped precipitously. Both Republicans and Democrats joined together to do so, due to pressure from the American public and the impending 2026 elections for Congress.
The Epstein Files—Congress, the Press and the Public Condemn the Failure to Release Numerous Documents
Almost every House member, both Democrat and Republican, voted for the bill to release the Epstein files to the public. The bill was unanimously approved by the Senate. On Friday, Dec. 19th, a very large tranche of documents were released. However, both Republicans and Democrats severely criticized it, as many pages were completely blacked out and other pages were missing. In one transcript from the Grand Jury, which was released according to court order, all but one of the 119 pages was blacked out.
On Sunday, “The NY Times” reported that 16 pages, including a photo of Trump, were taken down from the government website, although some more were released later that day. One of the House members who spoke out forcefully against the bill was Marjorie Taylor Greene, formerly one of the strongest supporters of the executive branch. Ms. Greene is now resigning her House seat, stating that she believes the Democrats will take the House in next year’s elections, which would leave her in the minority party in Congress and therefore in a weaker position.
Congress Has Called for Investigation of the War Department for Bombing Boats Near Venezuela
Republicans joined Democrats to demand videos of the bombings of boats, (which appeared to be fishing boats), in Venezuela. The executive branch had announced these actions based upon suspicion that these boats were taking drugs such as fentanyl to the United States, yet no proof of that was ever produced by the Trump administration. In fact, drugs from that part of South America were usually cocaine and fentanyl was not associated with drug trafficking in that part of the world. (Notably, the Vice President, J.D. Vance, joked that he wouldn’t recommend going fishing in that part of the ocean at this time.) A strong bipartisan group of Senators and House members has demanded they be allowed to
review the videos in order to investigate the bombings.
THE LOWER FEDERAL COURTS ARE FIGHTING UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND UNLAWFUL ACTIONS BY THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH
Based upon a federal court order, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was finally released from ICE custody on December 11th. He has now been able to return to his family after a year where he was sent back to El Salvador, despite a court order prohibiting that action. He had been housed in a torture prison in El Salvador due to a mistake by the Trump administration, and despite the fact that he had no criminal history. Even after admitting it was a mistake to do so, the Trump Administration refused to release him for many months and then tried to send him to a country where he had never lived. This is only one of the numerous losses in court recently suffered by the Trump administration.
In separate court actions, efforts to prosecute Letitia James, Attorney General of New York and James Comey, former head of the U.S. Department of Justice, by the current D.O.J. failed spectacularly. In both cases, motions to disqualify the lawyer appointed by the Attorney General were granted, as the woman who was hired, Lindsey Halligan, had not been constitutionally appointed and had never tried a criminal case before. Halligan was hired only after several Assistant Attorneys General had refused to prosecute these cases, due to a lack of evidence. This embarrassment to the Trump administration was widely publicized in the media.
THE PRESS AND OTHER MEDIA ARE STRONGLY CRITICIZING THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
Both the television and print media have severely criticized the Trump administration recently, as a result of numerous errors. When Trump attacked the recently deceased filmmaker, Rob Reiner and his wife, only a day or two after their murder by their youngest son, even Republican loyalists in Hollywood reacted with horror at his cruel statements about the beloved filmmaker.
Trump’s recent speech to the country, denying any connection with the rise in prices following his imposition of huge tariffs on goods coming into the U.S. from many countries, was widely panned as well. Trump had used the speech to tell Americans that they were merely imagining that they couldn’t afford groceries and other goods they needed for themselves and their families.
This week, as explained above, the media again attacked the President for his failure to release many of the Epstein files, despite campaigning on the issue and making numerous promises to do so.

Extend the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits now before the Congress breaks for the holidays and prices go up as much as 75%-114%.
Four moderate Republicans joined with Democrats today to try to get Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Thune to post a vote on a clean three year extension of the ACA’s tax credits before Congress goes home for the holidays. This is necessary to avoid skyrocketing costs of medical care which could turn out to be as much as a 75% to 114% increase for millions of Americans. Some other bill sponsors have tried different bills which add to the ACA some unfortunate policy changes and abortion restrictions. So far Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Thune have expressed no interest in posting the clean version of the ACA extension vote before Congress‘s holiday break. House Republicans approved today Johnson’s different narrow package designed to lower health care costs over years to come but it fails to address the expiring enhanced subsidies added during the pandemic. This ignores the expiring tax credits and the spiking costs for tens of millions of Americans next year according to CNN. The House voted 216-211 to send Johnson’s House GOP package to the Senate where it is not expected to be voted on until after the holidays. Help our Representatives and Senators to change Johnson’s and Thune’s minds about posting a vote to extend clean ACA premium tax credits now before prices rise dramatically.
Script:
Hi, my name is (name) and I’m a constituent from (city, zip)* and I’m calling to ask my (representative/senator) to support a clean extension of the ACA premium tax credits and to oppose the House GOP package or any bill that includes abortion restrictions or other new restrictions including those on gender-affirming care. Congress must act now to protect affordable healthcare before costs skyrocket, and financially devastate millions of Americans. If enhanced subsidies collapse, enrollees will see premium payments increase by 114%, according to KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group.
(Optional: include a personal story of your experience with the ACA if it would be helpful.)
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
4 GOP House Reps just defected and signed onto Hakeem Jeffries discharge petition to force a vote on extending the ACA subsidies for 3 years!!! They defied Mike Johnson and Trump.
This means every single member of the House of Representatives is going to have to vote on record about whether health insurance will remain affordable for millions of people.
Do not underestimate the significance of this. MAGA is cracking.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Protect state-level artificial intelligence (AI) regulations
Trump has signed an executive order to block state-level regulation of AI. Congress needs to pass strong federal language to regulate AI, and not hinder any state-initiated regulation of AI. To date 30 states have passed laws to regulate dangerous aspects of AI, such as pornography.
Remember that in June, Republicans tried to add to the “big beautiful bill’s” language to prevent state governments from enforcing any AI laws for the next 10 years. Fortunately, that was taken out of the bill
Now Republicans are renewing their efforts to block all state-level AI regulations as an amendment to the annual must-pass NDAA (national defense authorization act) in Dec. Because there is opposition to no state involvement in AI, the Trump administration has drafted an executive order to create an AI litigation task force to sue states that try to regulate AI. Those states could lose broadband funding. This gives large tech companies greater latitude to do what they want.
Script:
Hi my name is (name). I am a constituent from (city)* I am concerned that the Trump administration will block state-regulation of AI and instead cater to big technology companies’ interests. I ask my (Rep,/Senator) to please work to allow state-initiated safeguards to regulate AI in addition to federal regulations, thus protecting our users’ needs instead of only large tech companies’ priorities. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Protect access/funding to gender-affirming care.
This House has scheduled two bills this week seeking to ban and criminalize gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
DHR 498 “Do No Harm in Medicaid Act“ (Rep Dan Crenshaw R-TX) to ban Medicaid coverage of gender-affirming care of trans youth.
HR 3492 “Protect Children’s Innocence Act” (Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene R-GA) bans all gender-affirming care nationwide and makes it a felony offense. Similar language appeared in the draft of the Big Beautiful Bill. Republican legislators are now moving to reverse Medicaid and ACA insurers’ requirement to honor, gender-affirming surgery and hormone therapy, which is known to save lives.
Script:
Hi, my name is (name) and I am a constituent from (city)* I’m calling my representative to oppose HR 3492 the “Protect Children’s Innocence Act” and HR 498 the “Do No Harm In Medicaid Act.” These two bills unnecessarily ban and criminalize healthcare for transgender Americans. Congress should increase access and reduce cost for constituents, not attack vulnerable populations, keeping them from life-saving care. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Andy will be talking about why I'm supporting challengers to State Senator James Beach and others who continue to fuel corrupt machine politics in New Jersey, and why we need a new kind of politics rooted in accountability and people-powered leadership. This will be a great opportunity to hear from our tremendous Senator about his ongoing fight for NJ citizens. You can RSVP here.
2. Bystander Intervention Rapid Response Training: This in-person Bystander Intervention training presented by CRI will introduce people to actions they can take if they witness an ICE arrest. Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
CTA
This is a fun one!!
Recently, there was a NJ State Senate public hearing about a bill that would make it more difficult to investigate public corruption. James Beach, the Democrat in charge of the hearing supported the bill and was extremely rude to anyone speaking in opposition to the bill. Andy Kim and Attorney General, Matt Platkin were forced to wait for hours to speak and ultimately went last. This bill is part of the DEMOCRATIC MACHINE that we are trying to fight against (Republican or Democrat). Lets take some time to call Senator Kim and AG Platkin to say THANK YOU for standing up to Government Corruption!! Senator Kim is proving through his actions that he stands for the people!!
PS- The bill was pulled yesterday!!!!!

Hello SJNOWIndivisibles,
Call to Action: Impeach Hegseth
March 24: Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared highly sensitive US military strike plans in Yemen two hours before it occurred on Signal, a chat app. Multiple former senior intelligence officers as a “shocking risk to national security” and that such a breach would normally prompt the resignation or firing of those responsible.
April 20, 2025: Hegseth shared similar sensitive military attack plans in another Signal chat with a dozen people in his personal circle, including his wife and lawyer, who have no security clearance.
July 10, 2025: Hegseth failed to inform the Trump administration of his unilateral decision to pause weapons delivery to Ukraine. This decision resulted in a frenzy in the White House before Trump ultimately reversed the pause. Hegseth continued to prove he is not qualified.
Sept 24, 2025: Defense Secretary Hegseth has threatened to revoke access to journalists who report information without Pentagon approval, attacking freedom of speech. He also eliminated the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, a decades-old advisory group that provides support and recommendations for women in the military, claiming that it advances “a divisive feminist agenda.”
Sept 30, 2025: In an unprecedented and high-risk gathering of military officials, Hegseth gave a wildly political speech and ordered a number of changes to the department, including fewer consequences for those who engage in sexual misconduct or war crimes. He also attacked women in the military and he threatened to oust anyone who disagrees with his leadership.
December 1, 2025: The Washington Post reported that Secretary Hegseth gave explicit orders to kill any survivors of the initial September 2nd strike of a boat in the Caribbean. Lawmakers say this follow-up strike to murder individuals may be a war crime and have pushed for a bipartisan investigation into the unauthorized boat strikes and Hegseth’s conduct.
SCRIPT: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge you to move to impeach Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. He has openly encouraged our military to commit war crimes. He is unfit for leadership and must be investigated and prosecuted for his unlawful actions.
Thank you.
Herbert Conaway (D-NJ) 202-225-4765
